Default [290.10] Systemfreeze NVRM xid:31 (Ubuntu 11.10 Kernel 3.0.0-13)

Hi,

I have one or two system freezes per day recently, which means that the screen freezes and the only thing that reacts is the mousepointer. Keyboard inputs don't have any effect.

After rebooting the machine I always found the following message in kern.log:
NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 31, Ch 0000000b, engmask 00000120, intr 10000000

The problem persists also if I go back to driver version: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09

Thanks a lot for you help!

P.S: bug report attached.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem on Ubuntu 11.10 with the recommended drivers. Does anyone have a solution ?

Thanks.

There is probably no solution, yet. I have same problems. I hope NVIDIA will pay attention to this soon.

Although still using driver version 290.10 I was able to nearly get rid of those system freezes. In my case, this problem occured quite often when I was using flash (e.g. youtube).
I tried different flash player versions but that didn't solve the problem.
Eventually I use a firefox plugin (Flash video replacer) for replacing the flash videos with their corresponding WebM version, which works fine for me (as a temporary workaround).

May Flash also be a possible source of problem on your side?

Well occurence of these errors can be reduces by disabling composition and maybe by disabling flash, however, there are still some situations when it freezes... :/

Please mention in different cases/steps in which you are able to reproduce this issue?

My computer freezes for sure, when I enable compositoin in KDE and then normally use it (moving windows, minimizing, maximazing) for a while, approx. one freeze per 5 minutes. When I disable composition those freezes are not so frequent, approx. one freeze per 1-2 hours.

Well, steps to reproduce are:
1) Start KDE
2) Enable composition with OpenGL
3) Use computer and wait for freeze

My graphics card is NVS 5100M.

It is also freezing quite often (approx. once per 10 minutes) while plaing World of Warcraft even with disabled composition.

If you would need more logs, then just tell me. I have already uploaded couple of logs some time ago. Look at http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...7&postcount=67 (system description) and http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...7&postcount=68 (nvidia-bug-report and Xorg logs).

I have also tried the most recent versions of linux kernel, nvidia drivers, Xorg server and KDE and the problem still persists.

Oh, sorry. My bad, my logs show NVRM Xid: 13 most often. Other Xid numbers are 1, 6 ,8, 26 and 56. You can look here (the most recent errors are at the end), those are most of my NVRM errors. I will switch to nvidia from nouveau and attach nvidia-bug-report asap.

EDIT: Ok, I reproduced freeze and created nvidia-bug-report.log (after 2 freezes) and here is snippet from messages log.
Code:

Similar problems here: GigaByte GT 440, Gentoo, driver 290.10, Kernel 3.0.6, KDE 4.7.3, xorg-server 1.11.2, 1920x1080_50, Enermax 385W power supply, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+.

Problem #1:
Kill X or logout of KDE: Errors in the log and X won't restart. ALWAYS reproducable. Machine remains responsive. Output switched often to 640x480_60 when it happened. Switching composite off did not fix this.

Problem #2:
Sometimes system freeze in OpenGL app (MythTV Frontend Menu). Total freeze and often takes out my entire LAN (probably bombards it with packets). Not reproducable.

Problem #3:
Sometimes system freeze while playing video with VDPAU (MythTV Frontend). Total freeze and often takes out my entire LAN (probably bombards it with packets). Not reproducable.

Tested driver 285.05.09 shortly, problem #1 also there.

With driver 275.09.07, problem #1 disappeared, but got problem #2 VERY often -> not usable.

No problems at all with a 7300GT.

So, I exchanged the GT 440 for a GT 430. Since then, no problems at all, yet. Could be, the GT 440 had a hardware problem, too.

Log from problem #1:
