Default Gentoo Linux - OpenGL does not work

Hi

I use Gentoo Linux 1.4 and Kernel 2.4.21.
I have KDE 3.12 (or 3.13?) installed and XFree86 4.20 and OpenGL 3D Acceleration doesn't work. I use the latest driver that's in my portage, I think it's 44.96

My Hardware:

Graphics-Card: MSI Geforce 3 Ti 200
CPU: Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton)
Mainboard: EPoX 8K9A2

I've followed a HOWTO, but it still doesn't work.

My kernel supports agpart, my via chipset and DRM, I have emerged the nvidia-kernel and the nvidia-glx and made a opengl-update and I enabled the driver in my xf86config.

When the driver is enabled, my X doesn't start.

Here my XF86Config

One small correction:

Not just OpenGL doesn't work, the nvidia-kernel can't be loaded at all.

Do you have agpgart compiled as modul?
If not, that is your problem (if you use nvgart, you do not need anf agpgart support in the kernel).
DRM should NOT be in the kernel. You do not need it.

After all..

opengl-update was ok?

Does lsmod show nvidia loaded after a reboot?
Read the log file /var/log/XFree86.0.log for hints, might also have to put nvidia in /etc/modules.autoload file if the modules.conf not working right.

Don't see any reason for AGP kernel stuff unless your using a different non-nvidia card such as ATI or Voodoo...etc

You have the same problem that i had with slackware and rock linux (rock linux is also a compile project version of linux, only with the ideology that the user determines function in a different way)...

First of all, if you run modprobe, do you get an error message?

If not, e-mail me at snap.it@telia.com and i will tell you what i did...

I'm just rebuilding my kernel, I had agpart not as module... I hope this will do the trick, otherwise I will post the log here next time

by the way, the opengl-update worked, but still i couldn't start X...

Cya,

If you are serious about getting a Radeon, i suggest you get involved in the OSS community as you will need it to get drivers that really does it for you... it is doable...

But if you are aiming for OSS, you have to be prepared for patching drivers and reporting bugs DOES actually help in the OSS community...

Cya,

please print your warnings and errors from the XFree86.0.log so we can "try" to help, you've come this far as to get Gentoo running I know your very patient, so lets not give up yet eh?.

1. Start with the kernel, be careful what the /etc/make.conf has,
leave the CHOST var but watch whats in CFLAGS=???
if theres a 03 there this could cause some things to crash, might not need the funroll loops, I would remove all but mcpu=athlon-xp for a safetly net.

- No AGP (NO Modules nothing)
- No DRI
- No ACPI
- No APIC, No APIC-IO
(basic power managment OK to build in or module)

enable for Athlon
enable for MTRR
enable for MCE (machine check exeption)
module the CPUID for kicks.
(all the remainder of kernel use your best judgment for things such as Via
IDE controller and your filesystems...etc).

this "should" get your kernel going without crashing and lockups

2. XF86Config-4

You can do something like this for the screens section if you wish for more modes in X:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "NvAgp" "1"
Option "NoLogo" "1"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Note the NvAGP = "1", since you dont have AGP in kernel it will be used by nvidia drivers instead, move yours from device section into screens like I have it, my last ditch effort to help if im not too late.

I did exactly what you suggested, i doublechecked everything etc. but it still doesn't work.

And I'm afraid I can't give you a log because my machine crashes while booting with the nvidia driver enabled in the XF86config.

I've now bought myself a cheap Radeon, should be much easier to install that one =)

Thanks to all that tried to help me, I really appreciate that, but I'm afraid it didn't work.
