X leaves black screen when logging out

Hello,
I have a NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go 64 MB, AGP 4 x card in my Laptop. I'm running Linux Knoppix 3.2 (Debian stable/testing) and installed your driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run.

Starting X is no problem and everything seems to work. But when I logout to get to the plain Shell there is just a black screen left. But the computer doesn't hang, because if blindly log in and call reboot then this command is executed. It is even possible to restart X - the black screen then disappears and everything works fine again. So there seems to be a problem switching from graphics mode back to text mode.
Please help because it's really annoying if you cannot read the messages when shutting down (you never know really whether your computer shut down correctly or not).

I had the same problem with my DELL Inspiron 8200. Everything resolved fine after a did a video BIOS update.

Thanx for your hint, but I did a normal BIOS update just before I installed the driver...or dos VIDEO BIOS mean something different to the normal BIOS? And if so, where can i get such a BIOS? I seachred the Nvidia site but did not find any...

Indeed, a video bios update is something totally different than a normal bios update. I've got mine from the manufacturer of my laptop.
