Graphics or Gameplay?

Which would you rather have in your game?

For me, it is a pretty easy choice that I would rather pay $60 for a game that has great gameplay, than a game that has poor gameplay, but great graphics.

I wouldn't hesitate to pay full price for the next installment of HL even if they use HL2 engine.

So to be extreme, all of you that voted for gameplay own a wii correct? Surely Zelda has better gameplay than crysis 2?

Since I caused this thread, I voted gameplay. If you would've asked me a few years ago, I would've said graphics all the way. Graphics play a small role in the overall quality of a game but it does not make for 95% of the game.

Gameplay, but then some advances in graphics can actually help gameplay too!

yep, and appropriate gameplay can help highlight superior graphics.

Yes it does. That wasn't the best example. While I always prefer gameplay over graphics, there are some limitations. The game cant consist of stick figures and try to create Skyrim. The graphics must assist the gameplay in some form.

Well that's kind of a given. You need graphics good enough to get the art style across which falls back to gameplay. Skyrim is a perfect example of that. Nothing state of the art in that, still dx9, but how the environments look just makes the gameplay experience so much better.

Skyrim doesn't need tessellation, dx11, and all that other crap to have great gameplay.
