Cool

Hi All,

This is the first set of mini benchmarks run on my system. The settings were set to maximum quality, or at least what I could set in the options section, including HQ 3D hardware sound + EAX extension. I am using the Omega KX 1.1.82 driver with quality settings on. All of these are the more strenious botmatch bechmarks so don't be scared by the results. The resolution was set to 1024x768, max.

My system spec is listed at the bottom of my post so u can compare. Let me know if there are any resolution/specific settings that u would like me to run. I will run them in the evenings and post it later that night.

Comments are also welcome

The more I play it, the more I like it. I think it's a worthy successor to my old favorite UT. But it's not a replacement, because the feel is just too different between the two games. So I'll most likely keep playing both for a while (at least until I start seeing 90fps average at 1024x768x32 max AA max aniso in UT03, at which point I have a pretty strong feeling UT will be as old as Moses..).

I just recently found out about the other extra moves (beyond double jumping), and the dodge-jump is especially useful, at least in the indoor map. Everyone by now has seen the Super Armor on top of the one boiler in a mid-level room of the map? Well, there's two ways I've found to get to it. The first requires shield jumping (using the primary fire fully charged for the hammer's replacement thingy), which takes a nice toll on health. The second is to come from the one room where the rl is in the pool of water, onto that side room (the one with the missing wall that looks out into the room with that boiler and the Super Armor). Dodge-jumping from the edge of that room will allow you to get onto the pipes beside the Super Armor, and then it's an easy double jump up one pipe to pick it up. The best part is there's no damage involved with the move, though I'm still practicing hitting it successfully- mistime the jump on the dodge and you won't make it.

The dodge-jump is also useful for getting around the map really fast. From recent experiences, it's second only to using the speed boost (from collecting 100 adrenaline pts.).

And you left out the Berserker adrenaline use, which I believe is 2 forward/2 back. Berserker lets you shoot twice as fast. (I used to think it was just like the damage amp, ie. 2x damage per hit, but it's NOT, it's 2x as many chances to get the hits. Combine that with the damage amp for some real fun. )

And I stand corrected on my previous comment about the shock sound. The combo sound is mucho-macho, especially compared to the sound in UT. However, the sounds for both primary and alt fire still aren't to my liking, most likely because I'm just used to the ones in UT. Minigun rocks, especially with the alt-fire (hint: with careful aim at someone's head, you can kill as quickly or more so than the mini in UT).

One weapon that was under-used (because it generally stunk) in UT is the goop-gun, aka biorifle. I've found UT2003's to be much better (it seems that the range for the primary fire is quite a bit better or something. Dunno, except that I DO know I had less trouble hitting folks with it than with the same weapon in UT).

The overall feel of this game is much more Quake3ish to me, but not so much that I'm turned off. The biggest issues I have with Quake3 are:

1) Hokey movement physics:
Whenever I'm moving around a map, it feels as if the floor is made of ice and I'm skating everywhere. Make a corner and slide to the outside, etc. UT was MUCH more precise. UT2003 doesn't feel as precise as UT, but still not nearly as loose as Q3 does.
2) Lack of dual-mode weapons:
Okay, so this is really nitpicky. But I like having two possible weapons available at all times without waiting for the weapon-change delay. No need to comment on why both UT and UT2003 work so well for me there..
3) The game's handling of lag:
Dunno why, but Q3 was always so much more unplayable that UT for me any time lag hit (either ping spikes or packet loss). I have experienced the 'running around the corner of an upper level, suddenly running around the corner of an upper level into thin air' type of thing so many times in Q3 that it wasn't funny. Even worse was the hyper-speed movement as the game worked to catch my player position up to where the server says I should be after some lag. UT / UT2003 have some issues during lag, but most of the time it's much less apparent and much more playable.

Performance-wise, I'm really shocked at UT2003. I see dips into the upper teens/low 20's in really congested servers in DM-Antalus. That's not the shocking part. The shocking part is, as several of you have said, that it doesn't feel like it's less than 50-60 fps most of the time (even when the fps counter is showing 23-24fps..). Really good work doing whatever they did to allow this to be true, nice Epic / DE. I couldn't play UT or Q3A with framerates like that (trust me, I tried it not long ago with my old Matrox G400Max while I waited for my replacement GF4). I can't wait to see how it must be at a constant 50+ fps with all these settings jacked up.

(Quick note: settings are as follows-
I edited the ut2003.ini file to crank everything the the maximum level, superhigh, etc. Turned everything on.
1024x768x32 res
4Xs FSAA
NO aniso)

Erm, and now I have one question for you guys- who is using the RivaTuner D3D LOD patch? I'd like to use it, since I find I like the effect of the 4Xs FSAA better than the quincunx + 2x aniso (and get better / equal fps with 4Xs no aniso), but since I keep hearing that using that LOD patch helps some in D3D, it'd be nice.. What do I need to do to take advantage / use the patch?

I think the pace of UT2003 has been balanced perfectly. And we haven't even seen the game in its entirety yet. But, it's not quite as fast and ridiculous as Quake 3, and not quite as slow as the original Unreal Tournament. Middle of the road, the way it should be. Life must maintain a balance, Yin and Yang, and in this case, UT2003 pulls it off with style and beauty :P

yea, something like a feature list on the news page b4 you download it would be nice.

Also I think I'm addicted baby

The game so far still doesn't feel the same as UT, but I dont think it ever well. One thing I notice thats funny is that a lot of ppl say they can't feel a game when it first comes out when the truth is that rarely ever happens. I'll keep playin' both of 'em for the time being, until I get a rig bad enough to run this baby w/ all the eye candy up, online.

.....on second thought, I'll probably keep UT on my hdd for a while, its a legacy.

lol yea I'd hope so and actually if you look at the screen, you can see how crappy the textures look, but I'm still bottlenecked by my cpu.

there were apperentley some network freamskip probs too... causing something along the lines of "fake" lag which is now fixed.. strange

althoguh having played this online a few times now i can safley say im VERY impressed... its slicker than the origional UT... and the weapons seem a little more balanced

i cant wait!
