Default Nvidia drivers slow on linux with 8400M GS

Back in the days when you had an Nvidia card you were lucky, yes you had to install the driver manually but it worked, now it's really unbearable. I've been using Nvidia cards on linux for the past 10+ years but never I felt so frustrated with them.

I think the problems started when distros started moving to Xserver 1.0. (last year or at the beginning of this year, I think)

Everything feels slow, switching tabs in the browsers takes probably a second. I've tried a couple of distros even some with rolling-release, I've installed the driver manually, I've tinkered with aliasing, fonts, icons, themes yet no success. I don't use compiz or any other eye-candy, standard xfce. (gnome 3 is unusable anyway with the nvidia driver)

The nouveau driver works great except it turns my laptop into a frying pan.

I've ran gtkperf on a couple of computers and every one of them blows nvidia out of the water even 6 year old laptops with integrated Intel cards.

Nvidia driver version: 290.10
server vendor version: 1.10.4 (11004000)

Linux ubulap 3.0.0-14-generic #23-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 21 20:28:43 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
