Well Nvidias GK104 doesn't look that much better either.

Its suppose to be a 570gtx replacement and ~90-96% faster, nothing special if its true.. Imo the only thing that looks good is GK100, but that's still far far way..

No, I'm hoping AMD has something up there sleeves. This just seems like they opted to release first instead of focus on having a more competitive product.

Anyhow, a lot of speculation still as Kepler is a ways off. I'm starting to think I won't be buying any new GPU this year. Maybe next year with the 8 series from AMD. Or who knows, maybe I'll find a Kepler that offers GTX 580 performance while be very conservative on the heat and power fronts, for a reasonable price. If so, and even with how much I've been pleased with my recent AMD cards, it'd be back to nVidia for me.

Keep in mind that the policies are different for both companies, as ATI does not want to make GPU's with very large die sizes like Nvidia does, and leaves the very highest end version of their product up to dual GPU cards like the upcoming HD7970 card, wich is due in march, and seeing how crossfire is already scaling with the initial driver, you know nothing with touch that for quite a while.


Part why Nvidia makes much larger dies is what keeps it ahead in terms of performance since for the last several generations, it's been that way as i don't remember a single of their GPU's beating ATI/AMD based ones when using the same transistor budget...If fact you'd have to go back to the DX8 days with the Geforce 4Ti 4600 versus the radeon 8500(60 million transistors in each one) to see it happen.


Now what finances it isn't really the gaming version of the chips, but rather the quadro/ tesla versions that sell for the professional market and sell for several times more than the gaming version, and it's basically the same chip, just different firmware on the GPU and different drivers that are more focused towards professional applications, and it's that balance that's increasingly more difficult to strike as time goes on, now that both companies are adding a lot of features or extra performance that have no use in gaming, but do in GP-GPU scenarios, like double precision floating point math or ECC memory support.


Basically it isn't about gaming performance anymore like the old days... We're well beyond that now.

Errr...that's not "impressive" to you?

Do you realize you just posted information that (if true) means NVIDIA's second tier chip makes the HD7970 look like a piece of crap?

GTX570s trade benches with 6970s (current ATi flagship part), 7970s (next gen ATi flagship part) are around 40% faster than GTX570s and 6970s.

If the GK104 (NV 2nd tier replacement) is indeed 90-96% faster it's a whopping 50-56% faster than ATi's next gen flagship part! The 7970 will be called BeefDozer Part Deux or Faildozer Rev2 by everyone on the net if you are right.

The GK100 will likely beat a dual gpu 7970, or be close enough to it no one in their right mind would bother CF.

I truly hope you and your post are right, it would be epic news for all gamers if true. The only people who would be sorry to see this come to pass work at AMD.

Here's the chart again:





Since the HD6970 trades blows with the GTX570 and the former does 22 Fps at 2560*1200, and the GK104 is meant to replace the GTX570, it would score 69 Fps, and the replacement for the GTX580 would score 85 Fps, easily beating a dual HD7970 setup that's packing 550 GB/sec of memory bandwith at stock clocks and an insane amount of fillrate and only 8.6 billion transistors between both GPU's.


Single GPU card beating a dual GPU setup in a game that scales extremely well in dual GPU....It's never happened in the past, so why should it happen now?

It would seem more in line with past launches that the GK104 be approximately equal to the 7970. Earlier in this thread I believe I said that if NV releases a second o r third tier part that equals or comes close to the 7970 first it would be good strategy and keep NV in half the high end market.

Then again, every now and again a breakout part happens. (E.G. 9700Pro, 8800GTX) So who knows till we see it?

Not 33 Fps versus 69 Fps at the same settings between an HD7970 and this GK104....Being faster is one thing, as we've seen 25~30% performance gaps but not over 100% faster for the same generation and using the same fab process


If it were, there would be no point in releasing an even higher end version of kepler, or a dual GPU version of the Kepler in a single card...Heck, the GK104 single GPU card would compete with the HD7990 dual GPU, assuming the latter scales perfectly to close to 100% in every game, wich it never will in every game.

Can we limit this discussion to the 7970 and real cards...I'm sick of all the rumors and trolling going on.

Tomorrow is launch day, and there has been no new/useful information in this thread for days.

I keep checking back as I'm considering making a purchase tomorrow, but all I see is Shadow, Road and Rollo in some sort of online discussion about a card that isn't launching tomorrow, isn't made by AMD and as far as we know....doesn't even exist.

Can we start talking about the easter bunny in here too...
