Default Re: 295.09 hangs KDE startup

For me, after upgrading 290.10->295.09 VLC started to hang a second after it started playing a video; most of the time, but not every time. May be related to the KDE problems (maybe it only affects Qt apps?). Note that I have disabled VDPAU in VLC.

Upgraded to KDE 4.7.4 from Experimental and now it does not even reach a desktop any more, it just stops in the second start splash sequence, clicking the mouse a bit will get the splash to disappear and to be left only with a black screen and a working mouse cursor.

As expected 290.10 works ok.

I got those issues since probably KDE 4.7.3. Didn't tried with 295.09 yet, but it happend like 50% times when I'm launching KDE. Upgrading to kde 4.7.4 and 4.8 RC1 didn't help. Whats causing kde hang is plasma-desktop is using 100%. What I do I'm killing it and re-launching it, and after few tries it lanunches properly. I got the trace, but I don't remember if I saved it when it launched properly or not... (it was few weeks ago and I planed to post it here or on kde forums, but finally i forgot)

Under Fedora 16, KDE 4.7.4, qt-4.8.0 NO PROBLEM.

From examiniation some of the above problems look like the ones originating from KDE 4.7.4 built
with herqq libraries thus using solid/upnp. See kde#259472 Fedora made this optional with a patch.
This causes crashes that look like originating from gui but it is not.

No herqq here, and still seeing the hangs. And those hangs disappear when downgrading nvidia.

I'm sorry, but You describe a different issue. I don't have herqq on my system too. And if You would take Your time to read all this thread, You would see that here is NO crash. GUI just get's stalled instead of crashing or fails to render large parts of it.

I have read the thread....just providing another data point...my grpahics card is Quadro NVS 295 (G98GL) which is working perfectly fine with 295.09 with the above configuration (running kdm as
well). If youi also read my post, I am saying "some of the problems..." not all. The reason is when
we updated KDE to 4.7.4 a month ago kwin, plasma etc would just not start and hang the initial
login stage (without crash messages). Spent a lot of time thinking it was related to nvidia/nouveau
but found out it was coming from upnp. So, just saying!

My previous reports were on my secondary system with the 8600GT, now i've manage to get the main rig ( same software since i was using the main harddrive ) on with my GTX460 and just out of curiosity tried 295.09 only to find, to my amazement, that it is working ok. strange.

Debian Sid 64bit
X 1.11.2.902 ( well 1.11.3 RC 2 according to the package changelog )
KDE 4.7.4
QT 4.7.4
driver 295.09

8600GT - KDE not starting with either KWin or Plasma-desktop crashing
GTX460 - no error

/LE: I spoke too soon, if after the first 2 boots everything was ok, this morning stuff began to rip apart, Kwin not starting, splash not ending and KDE not loading, every new X restart was bringing a new different issue

well, somehow restarting X is not working with the latest driver (somebody somewhere mentioned that). What helps when kde startup hangs (for me it's about 2/5 boot-ups) is just switch to TTY, kill plasma desktop, open yakuake (or run konsole from kurunner alt+f2, if you don't have yakuake already started) and run plasma-desktop manually. Still, it hangs sometimes, but is easy just to hit ctrl+c and run it again.
