Default Drivers problem

Hello, I really need help with my problem. I am not able to install any drivers in any kernel I have the install log is:

nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'
creation time: Thu Aug 28 12:07:02 2003

option status:
license pre-accepted : false
update : false
force update : false

uninstall : false
driver info : false
no precompiled interface: false
no ncurses color : false
query latest driver ver : false
OpenGL header files : false

XFree86 install prefix : /usr/X11R6
OpenGL install prefix : /usr
Installer install prefix: /usr
kernel include path : (not specified)
kernel install path : (not specified)
proc mount point : /proc
ui : (not specified)
tmpdir : /tmp
ftp site : ftp://download.nvidia.com

Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface
-> License accepted.
-> No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you li
ke the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel f
rom the NVIDIA ftp site (ftp://download.nvidia.com)? (Answer: Yes)
-> No matching precompiled kernel interface was found on the NVIDIA ftp site;
this means that the installer will need to compile a kernel interface for
your kernel.
-> Kernel include path: '/lib/modules/2.4.21/build/include'
-> Cleaning kernel module build directory.
executing: 'cd ./usr/src/nv; make clean'...
rm -f nv.o os-agp.o os-interface.o os-registry.o nv-linux.o nv_compiler.h *
.d NVdriver nvidia.o
-> Building kernel module:
executing: 'cd ./usr/src/nv; make nvidia.o SYSINCLUDE=/lib/modules/2.4.21/bu
ild/include'...

You appear to be compiling the NVIDIA kernel module with
a compiler different from the one that was used to compile
the running kernel. This may be perfectly fine, but there
are cases where this can lead to unexpected behaviour and
system crashes.

If you know what you are doing and want to override this
check, you can do so by setting IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH.

In any other case, set the CC environment variable to the
name of the compiler that was used to compile the kernel.

*** Failed cc sanity check. Bailing out! ***
make: *** [gcc-check] Error 1
-> Error.
ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

It's quite long, but I really don't know what can be the problem. Thanks for help

Compare the output of gcc -v 2>&1 | tail -1 with the gcc version string in /proc/version; if the major versions match, set IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH and retry the installation:

Code:
# IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=1 sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg0.run
Substitute NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run for NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg0.run if that's what you downloaded.

They don't match. First output is gcc 3.3.2 and the second one gcc 3.3.1

The major version does match (i.e. gcc 3.3), this should work out just fine.

That helped. Thanks a lot, you really helped me a lot. One more question(quite off topic), do you know how to configure(compile or what it is) kernel headers for linux kernel, when you download them after you downloaded kernel? Because when I don't have kernel-headers I am not able to compile nvidia driver for it

Since distribution vendors typically ship kernel source packages for their kernels, you shouldn't have to worry about kernel headers for such stock kernels. If you plan on using custom kernels, you'll need to make sure that you leave the kernel source tree in a configured state after building the kernel (i.e. don't make mrproper or delete the source tree).

I will try, but I am not sure whether the kernel has headers in itself. i did mrproper to 2.4.21 and its working fine, I did it to 2.6-test1 and it isn't working. And test2 isn't working at all:-)

Linux kernel source trees do include all the necessary header files, they are an integral part of the source. The 1.0-4496 NVIDIA driver does not work with Linux 2.6.0-test* out-of-the-box, you'll have to modify the kernel interface files (there's third-party patches) to establish compatibility. I advise against experimenting with development kernels without extensive Linux experience, though.
