i watched ballmer give the date for it the other night, man is that guy awkward. I think this will be less game oriented for pc and more for app/control use

That's not retarded at all... Two Kinect's, that look similar, aren't probably compatible, one costs whooping $100 more and you can both throw them out in a year or two, when a new Xbox comes out.

This one plugs on the PC and allows focus down to 40cm (less than 18in).
The new lens and the lower volume are supposed to be the reason for the price increase.

Might be tempting for my Media Center. Better than a remote for control.

well the kinect for xbox is subsidized through the game sales. there wont be a lot of games bundled through the pc kinect unit so they can't subsidize the price the same, so you're paying for the hardware

Microsoft has jumped the shark with this Kinect nonsense. The 360 was an excellent console until they got all jealous of the Wii profits and decided to shift into the casual market. Since then it's been all downhill. The only thing Kinect has ever been good for is guys video taping their hot girlfriends and slapping it on Youtube, other than that it's been the Wii's retarded cousin.

Besides that, does Microsoft even understand the Kinect audience? Who is going to use this thing on a PC?

I doubt this is for gaming or going to be part of Window's UI. More for researchers or hobbyists who want an easy to use depth cam.

edit: although it might be cool to make some head tracking mods similar to how Forza 4 uses Kinect.

Thing is there are more options to choose other than Kinect when it comes to PC motion sensors.

The Asus Xiton was released around a year ago and is priced 100$ less than the Kinect for PC. It is mainly used by would be devs to create there own motion games and apps and i have read that 'Portal 2' has certain levels designed for this device.

The price Microsoft is asking for the Kinect for PC is ridiculous and surely they don't think it's gonna do well at all...but then microsoft are good at jumping on the fail wagon.

Kinect for windows will have near mode and might be a different fish kettle

Cost is too high though, do not want.
