Default [vdpau] not enough resources error, causes software crash

Hi,

I cannot get VDPAU to work on my current setup, I have attached stderr.log and stdout.log of when I run:
Code:
mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau test.mkv
In some cases the entire system crashes. When I use xbmc, it just reverts to using software mode.

Note that when using ffh264 then everything plays fine.

I have uploaded test.mkv to partners.ftp.nvidia.com as requested in the vdpau sticky.

I have also tried various version of the drivers between 275 and 295.

Here is an excerpt from the log, which may be indicative:
Code:
VDPAU nvidia: Version: NVIDIA VDPAU Driver Shared Library 295.09 Thu Dec 22 01:45:59 PST 2011
VDPAU nvidia: Error detected 10 2252 7
VDPAU nvidia: Backtrace:

....

[vdpau] Error when calling vdp_video_surface_create: The system does not have enough resources to complete the requested operation at this time.
[vdpau] no surfaces available in get_image
The card is a GeForce 8600M, the BIOS says that it has 256mb video memory.

I read somewhere that version 256 of the drivers may not give this issue however I cannot install this version on Ubuntu 11.10 for unknown reasons (the install fails and the log files aren't clear as to what is going wrong). At first I thought I didnt have the correct linux-headers package installed, but I checked and it's there (apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)). If I can't find a fix for this issue with the latest drivers, how can I get the older drivers installed?
