Hi All
As stated I am a noob when it comes to nvidia cards running under Xwindows. I have perused a large number of previous posts and have checked everything I could find mentioned therein to try and fix problem myself but to no avail Details: System: Athlon 1100 w 512 MB RAM nv card: geforce4 MX440-8x distro: SourceMage kernel: 2.4.22-rc1 I am running the standard XF86Config that was generated by Xfree tools. I changed driver from nv to nvidia and added NvAgp "3" dri is off and glx is on. I am using 4496 driver. Problem: Whenever I type startx I get some garbage in bottom right corner of a black screen. The ONLY key combination I can get to work is ctrl-alt-delete which reboots my pc. Please let me know if any extra information is required as I would like to get this fixed as I turned away from my ATI card due to all the raves I kept hearing about nvidia in linux. grail |

did you try control-alt-backspace? this is supposed to kill the X server unconditionally.
also, do 'startx 2>&1 | tee /tmp/logfile | less' and this will give you a logfile to submit, as well as a scrollable history of the X error. good luck. |

There's a number of common error sources that may render a system more or less unreliable in combination with the NVIDIA driver; the most frequent causes of instant lockups upon starting the X server are the presence of the vesafb/rivafb drivers and AGP related difficulties. You should check if you're using a Linux framebuffer device and disable it if you do; it's also a good idea to disable AGP to see if the problem is related to the current AGP configuration. If neither fixes your problem, there's some other things you can try (disabling UP I/O APIC support, if present, disabling ACPI, ...).

okay ... switched off the agp (nvagp = 0) and now I can startx
)I tried running glxgears and glxinfo but get an error for both (not sure if this is related to switching agp off?) Error for glxinfo: couldn't find RGB GLX visual Then it draws a table and directly after is Segmentation fault. Error for glxgears: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual Suggestions on next stepping stone are appreciated ![]() grail |

If you're still using the same XFree86 configuration file you posted earlier, you'll need to uncomment the Load "glx" line to enable the NVIDIA GLX extension.

Howdy all
I hope I have not mislead anyone that my woes were over ![]() I still am unable to get my card to run and was just wondering if anyone had had anymore suggestions for me? I appear to be able to get into X if I switch the agp off. Waiting to hear from someone ![]() grail |

I could also be blind, but I can't see where you selected the "nvidia" driver in your XF86Config file. There should be a line that looks like this: driver "nvidia"
