Perhaps a problem with AGPGART?
I've been struggling to figure out why my RH9 desktop seems so sluggish, especially compared to similar boxes with comparable graphics cards. I stumbled upon an interesting message in the output of dmesg:

FYI, this is a Geforce4 MX chipset, as bundled with the Shuttle SN41G2.

upgrade your kernel. Kernel 2.4.22 has more AGP GART modules then previous kernels including support for nforce2 agp.

Patch works as well
nVidia provides a patch with the nForce(2) drivers for audio/network that adds agpgart support for kernel 2.4.20 as well. That's what I use on my SN41G2.

As I recall, I never could get the patch to install correctly. Thanks for the tip though. Do you notice performance issues, namely, 2D sluggishness. Such as resizing windows, moving windows, etc.?

Nope, no problems at all... The patch installed fine for me first try; what kernel sources are you using again? I use gentoo-sources (2.4.20) and it patched fine and made the option for the nforce agp chipset available in my kernel configuration.

I just finished trying to compile the 2.4.22 sources from kernel.org, with no success. I got them to install, but had a horrid time running them. I obviously didn't configure it correctly; and even then, the AGPGART stuff didn't start correctly. I got the same error messages. I rolled back to the 2.4.20-18.9 kernel I already had running.
I am using the stock RedHat kernels. I realize this probably contributed to my less-than-successful attempt to get 2.4.22 running. I've read that the nVidia patch does not work right for the RedHat kernel sources, is this true? I had tried at one point, but couldn't get it to work correctly. Perhaps I'll try again. Interestingly enough, if I look at /proc/sys/nvidia/agp/status (i don't have the exact path handy...), it says AGP is running. If this is so, what exactly does AGPGART do? Thanks Norman |
