Exclamation Problem with GeForce 2 MX400

Hi, i have a:
GeForce 2 MX400
Linux Mandrake 9.1
Intel Pentium III
365 Mgs RAM

I install the nvidia drives "Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2", no problem with install.
Now have a problem:

If i start linux with x server (runlevel 5), the computer stop working (blocks) in the phase to initializing peripherals. I need the shut down the computer.

If i start linux with VGA console (runlever 3) with the user user "root", and type "startx" the computer start the x server normally. If the user is a normal user (not root) the computer blocks (stop working) in the phase to initializing peripherals.

What is the problem? I need help. Thanks

Check your the permission of /dev/nvidia*

If you use autologin, it's a bug in mandrake.
The owner of /dev/nvidia* is not set correctly.
I have to put chown ??? /dev/nvidia* in /etc/rc.local.

If you use normal login,
PAM should set the ower each time the user logins. Mdk 9.1 should have this by default.

should have the lines below

<dri>=/dev/nvidia* /dev/3dfx*
<xconsole> 0600 <dri> 0600 root
