Question parameter UseVBios, what does it do?

I've had problems with my text terminals being all black, X works fine. Googling lead me to try to set UseVBios to 0, which helped.

Now my question is what does "UseVBios" mean? I assume it has something to do with the video Bios. But what part of it does it turn off and is there a performanse difference? I googled for documentation on the parameters for the driver/module, but found nothing. Is there any documentation?

Switching from a graphical VT (X11) to/from a text VT takes several seconds. Switching between text VTs is fast.

I'm using the nvidia proprietary driver, version 280.13 on Ubuntu oneiric 64bit.
