Default gnome 3 (or kde 4.7) / xinerama compatibility.

OS: Ubuntu 11.10.

I have a 4 monitor 2 cards (nvidia 560 and 440 ). Xinerama mode fails for Kde and gnome 3, it does work with XFCE. I have the latest driver 295.20 (ppa version)

Any ideas when this compatibility bug is going to be resolved. Is there a beta version for the nvidia driver that might work.

Thanks

Can you explain issue and your hardware step up in more detail? Also please attach logs by running nvidia-bug-report.sh as root.

In xinerama mode only When kde starts the desktop layout is distorted and I am missing the panel. As far as gnome 3. It does dot start. I just get the background with no panels or menus.

I also use Xinerama with 290.10 drivers on Mageia Cauldron with 2monitors, 1GPU.
KDE works for me (but yout might want to fill or comment on a bug)
Gnome3 does not and there are open bugs:

The common thing to kde and gnome 3 is composition. Is it possible that xinerama and composition are not compatible. I also think that there are additional things in KDE and gnome 3 that are not compatible with xinerama on multiple GPU. When I disable composition I get different sets of problems. The nvidia driver has also some issues. I do not understand why the nvidia driver in windows works with no issues, but in linux it is missing some things. There was never a nvidia driver in linux that worked without issues as the driver in windows.

Don't use xinerama, use twinview. Xinerama brings with it a lot of deficiencies.

I use a rotated monitor. It never worked with Twinview and is not supported by nvidia-settings if at all.
With XFCE+KWIN most things work to my liking.
