Default why are core 2 prices retarded?

So long story short, I have a 2nd lga775 mobo to build a new backup system with. It pretty much just needs a cpu now, so I started looking around and to say I am shocked is an understatement. I was sad to see new egg pretty much sells nothing but refurbs, but the refurbs start at $70 for the really slow ones. Ebay and amazon.com pretty much gave me similar prices.. that is I could find a bottom of the line core 2 for about $100, but stepping up a little shoots the price way up. The q6600 that I bough in full packaging was $380 5 years ago... now I can have the OEM version for a cheap $200...wtf!

An i3-2100 which is faster then my Q6600 is a mear $125 new. So apparently I can get old memory, GPUs, and motherboards dirt cheap, but not the cpu's... does intel buy them back or something to screw people needing replacement parts for old PC's?
Mobo: EVGA 122-ck-nf68 680i sli, CPU: C2D Quad 6600, Video: EVGA GTX 460 1gb SC, Sound: X-fi gaming, Windows 7, Antec P180b,Thermalright Ultra-120 HSF, Antec TruPower TP3-650, 4 Gigs RAM

They don't make the chips anymore, and demand is still high as those chips are still solid performers by today's standards. Hence the high prices.

just like Vin said, people still buy upgrades, cpus are no longer made.

when supply is really low and demand is still somewhat high, prices will be high.

939 dual core Ahtlons 1-2 years ago still sold for 70-200.
Windows 8 the next big failure, right after Windows ME

I hear ya' OP- $299 for a Q9550. That's more than my CPU would cost brand new!

I've been eyein' the LGA775 CPUs @ newegg as well. Some have come down though, like this E8200. Refurbished, yeah, but it's under $100 and it's be a rockin' dual core system. I know more and more games can benefit from a quad core, but most still do okay on a strong dual core system, and unless you're an enthusiast a dual core is plenty for just basic desktop usage.

How much are you looking to spend?

I just upgraded my system to an i5 2500K and I have a Core2 Duo E6600, an Intel D975XBX2 motherboard, and 4GB of G.Skill F2-8000PHU2-2GBHZ RAM. Ran solid as a rock at 3GHZ for the last 3 years, I just wanted to upgrade to something new.

I was going to give the components to my little bro, but if someone here is looking to buy a Core2 I might sell it. All components have went through solid Prime95/IBT stress testing and are pretty much rock solid.
