Default Rocksmith is Awesome

I bought Rocksmith (PS3) for $49.99 at Best Buy last week. This probably one of the best purchases I ever made. It's Guitar Hero with a real guitar. I never bought Guitar Hero because the idea of pretending to play a guitar using a toy guitar seemed silly to me.

I have almost no guitar playing experience. I bought an cheap electric guitar for $150 (some are under $100). The game slowly teaches you as you play. When you start out the game just asks you to play a couple of notes along with the song. As you get better you play more notes and then even chords.

The classic Rock songs are excellent. Playing along to them is extremely rewarding. I'm hooked. I highly recommend this to anyone who has ever been remotely interested in playing guitar. And if you have kids it's a great way to get them doing something productive.

It definitely is the best guitar games out there now. I have played a real guitar (acoustic and electric) on and off for many years now, and this is the only guitar game I liked. With the recent patch some of the complaints about the game were partially corrected. You can learn how to play the songs correctly with the game, but for me, I wish they added a tablature display option especially in the learning sections because you will find out with some songs (like the DLC for Pearl Jam's Black intro at master level) that you will miss some notes/chords cause of how tightly packed the chords they want you to play are. You really can't clearly see them and the fretboard display is just a mess.

The only thing that is really horrible about the game (PS3 version) is the lag. Depending on your system set up (PS3->TV or HT etc...) and how sensitive you are to audio lag it could ruin the experience or at least make it less enjoyable. For my setup I had to wire analog audio RCA cables to my HT receiver because going digitally made the game so laggy it was pretty unplayable for me. After switching to analog, it got significantly better, but is still (for me) noticeable. In the game modes, it's playable for me since I can ignore the lag most of the time because of the other instruments/voice. But in "amp" mode where you can just play the guitar freely using the amps and effects pedals you unlock, I find it unplayable because I can clearly hear the lag and it affects my timing. You can use an acoustic guitar if you have one with the electronics for it, I have tested it out with my acoustic guitar, but your perception of the lag is significantly increased because you will hear the note(s) you hit much clearer ahead of what comes out of you speakers (like an always on delay pedal).

There's a PC version due 5/31/2012, this looks awesome. I have a Fender Strat and I may pick this up since I am still a Novice.

I don't experience lag. Maybe my ear is not fine tuned. However, you can try either plugging an amp (clean mode) between your guitar and ps3 or using a spliter to send sound to an amp while muting the game.

I haven't tried these methods but sounds like they should work.

Very effective way of learning the guitar and you can use any POS guitar with it, nice.

Once this reaches PC the open source crowd will most likely jump all over the idea if its a success, Like UltraStar but less pointless.

Yeah those are options, but not ones I am willing to do. I just don't use the amp mode at all and I can kind of ignore the lag now when playing the game itself.

As far as the lag goes, it is pretty dependent on the equipment you have and the chain (HDMI) between pieces not just your ear. I have an older HDTV (one of the first consumer 60" 1080p DLPs) so I think my main issue is that component. If you read around the net when the game came out, it was always a mixed bag because of the differing equipment people had. Some had horrible lag, some didn't. Supposedly the best way to play with very little lag is composite video + analog audio, but no way I want to try reading the notes coming at me at 480i.

I hope it reaches the PC. I'd definitely buy it again especially if people can figure out the file format and make our own songs. But it's a Ubisoft game, that's why I didn't hesitate to by it for my PS3. I think Ubi will either UbiDRM it to death in the best case scenario, but being Ubi, they just might cancel the PC release. This game was suppose to be release on all platforms at the same time then the PC got delayed and AFAIK no one answered if there would be DLC available on the PC version. I am sure they'll want to heavily encrypt the data to stop people from making their own songs. This game is a potential DLC gold mine, Ubi and the various music publishers will try to make it very difficult for 3rd parties to do anything. I think based on various music publishers feeling of Ubi having enough DRM protection on the song format will ship or sink this game from coming to PC so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it.

Yeah, I hear ya, I'll just wait a bit and see. If not, I'll get the 360 version.

It's fantastic, I imported it in early Jan for PS3 since it's not available here for ages and 360 has region locking. I'm pretty much a complete noob and my house mate has been playing casually for a few years but never got too far. Anyhow after a couple of weeks I'm pretty decent, can play most chords and keep up with some pretty intricate stuff. My house mate has unlocked mastermode on several songs. Quite a bit has come up so we've both been playing very little as of late, but we'll definitely get back into it.

Fantastic game... if you can call it that. If you ever wanted to learn guitar BUY THIS GAME. Especially if you already have a guitar lying around.

Lag was initially a little present and we had to adjust the settings a little. Using HDMI for video and AV leads through the audio into an amp and through the theater setup. Then we switched to our Panasonic projector (previously Sony Z series LCD) and it seems to have helped remove the little lag that was there. Don't get me wrong, there's still some, compared to playing guitar through my PC using an m-audio input it has a little more lag, but it's really easy to compensate for and you don't notice it.

Yes if this game cant get you into guitar then probably nothing can. You can always import if looking to buy on PS3 as there is no region locking. You will need a US PSN account and US CC to purchase dlc, but that's not too hard. There's been no update as to when the global release will be unfortunately...
