Default 4496 Driver works on install not on reboot

After a fresh installation of mandrake 8.1.I run the installer.(out of X) Everything is fine. Change my XF86 config according to instructions. Then startx. It works. I get the Nvidia logo and everything. I run Americas Army game and it works fine. Then Reboot and no go. I get
(EE) Nvidia Kernel failed to initialise!
NV. failed to open control device nvidiactl (nosuch device found)

I check that device is present.
XF86 Version is 4.1.0
Nvidia Geforce2 mx 4x agp
kernel 2.4.8-26mdk
Any help would be appreciated
Also I normally would add load "glx to config file under modules then change driver from nv to nvidia those are the only changes to make I guess. Unless dri is running but I couldnt find how to take out if present

Umm - both your XF86Config and XFree86.0.log talk about the nv module - that's the free module, not the NVidia one ('nvidia').

Is Mandrake changing your config file back on reboot or something???
