Default Ubuntu 11.10 with a GeForceFX 5700 - How??

Hi Guys,
This is my first post on here, and I hope someone can shed some light on my issue.
I run a Sony Vaio VGC-V2M all-in-one machine with the GeForceFX 5700 GPU onboard, and I currently run Ubuntu 10.04LTS on it without any issues, but on installing 11.x it just doesn't want to play. I've tried installing the latest driver through the command line using root, but upon installing it and re-booting it just bombs out and freezes.
Both LiveCD and an install of Ubuntu 11.10 shows a grey screen, and a cut out where Unity should be, and nothing can be displayed on screen.

Is there any solution to this? I've also tried GNOME 3, and this displays correctly, but runs very slow and laggy.

Cheers for any information....

Dave
