Because, imo, the 680 was always the 670. I think nVidia just pulled a fast marketing stunt with the 680. AMD had a solid product out and mostly available well before nVidia did- yet again. AMD was raking in the profits from the 7900s, just like they did with the 5800s. nVidia had to do something. So they launched a card that was the GTX680 in name only. I'm sure we'll not see any more 680s available for sale, or at least not in great supply. Prepare for a GTX685 instead that'll be much more deserving of such a name and asking price.

from what I hear gtx685 wont be out until end of year, so I could not have waited for that one.

But yeah at this point if i was buying a card I would get a gtx 670, especially with the demand of the gtx680 very difficult to get one. i wonder if it will be as difficult to get gtx 670

First of all, the fact, that GK104 is a chip meant for a midrange card was obvious from the beginning.

AMD did not have a solid product at all if it could be beaten by a midrange chip. NV even commented on that and you guys were laughing at them.

NVIDIA sure did use the situation to their advantage, because why not.

I agree that we'll probably see the GTX 680 in a limited supply, because they will be using the fully enabled chips on the GTX 690 for higher profits. The GTX 670 will take its place.

These short PCB's will look funny with watercooling.

Yeah - why produce a real "680" now when you can drop it later as a 685 or 780 when the 670 is equal to or better than the competition? It's capitalism at it's finest. I think it's awesome that the 670 is so good.

As nice a card as the 670 seems to be I just don't think the performance increase over my 5870 is worth the price of the card. I'll wait till the true next generation of cards from both AMD and nVidia and see what those offer over my 5870.

huh? It's pretty much twice as fast as a 5870.
