Default Screen backlight never goes off

The machine is a Dell Latitude E6410 with NVS 3100M controller. I'm using
kernel-3.4.3-1.fc17.x86_64 (though the kernel version doesn't seem to matter) and nVidia driver 295.59 (installed from RPM Fusion).

The problem is that the screen never goes to sleep. It does blank, but the backlight remains on forever.

Is this a setting that I can't find, or is it a driver bug?

The nouveau driver doesn't have this particular problem.

Default Re: Screen backlight never goes off

The kernel 3.4 series seems to need:

In the bootloader's (e.g. grub, lilo, syslinux) commandline, so we can use e.g.:

echo 8 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
To check:
cat /proc/cmdline
