Default Re: Please do not use 295.40 or the security patch with GeForce 6, 7 or 8800GTX/GTS c

Hi. I have a Quadro FX 4500 and a GeForce 7300GT. With the 295.40 driver, I get severe screen corruption and bad stuttering problems after suspend. With 295.33 I don't have that problem. With 295.33 + the security fix for CVE-2012-0946 applied, the problem comes back; it seems that something is trying to mmap offset 0x1000 size 0x1000, which fails the first check that the security patch adds. When that check fails, compiz can't bind pixmaps to textures, and the screen can't redraw itself.

Incidentally, reverting just the security fix from 295.40 makes my problem go away. More details in my bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/983323

i have a gforce 8500 GT and i had crashes also with 295.33. Crashes like - the whole pc just completely hangs or just reboots. I never had something like this befor with nvidia drivers (doesn't mean the driver was perfect before ) but the last working version was 290.10. Most of the time the error gets triggered when i use mplayer with vdpau enabled and tvout enabled. When the system doesn't crash while i use X11, most of the time when i exit X11 i don't get back to the console instead my tft goes into power saving mode and i can only shutdown the pc with the power button (acpid is running).

NVIDIA internal Bug Id 970244 to track this issue.

I then downloaded the patch and applied it to 295.33. Lo and behold: ~1535 FPS with GLXGears.

I apologize for the misinformation earlier. 295.33 with the patch works perfectly. 295.40's security patch is not the cause for the performance degradation.

Logs attached.

No problem so far with a 8800 GTS...

Hi all,

I'm running Ubuntu Linux 12.04, I'm using drivers 295.40 too and I've this graphic card:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G92 [GeForce 8800 GS] (rev a2)

I'm also experiencing weird Xorg crashes, expecially while I try to watch videos. I've already reported the bug to Ubuntu: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/986445

I'd like to be able to revert to an old (but more stable) driver. How can I do it?
I really don't care about security issues on this machine, unsless they're not remote security issues.

Could you please tell me how to install an older version of the driver? Thanks!

I've a Nvidia 8800 GS and I was experimenting Xorg crashes on my Ubuntu 12.04 and 295.40 driver.
Thanks to this repository https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates
I've installed 295.33 version and, for the moment, I'm not experiending these instability issues anymore.
I'll keep you updated.

We've identified two separate issues with 295.40; one affecting G80-based products and being tied to the security patch. The other affecting integrated graphics chipsets, which is independent of the security fix. The next release from the 295 series will address both of these, while still maintaining the security issue closed.

If you are running into a regression between 295.33 and 295.40, and are not on a G80 or an integrated GPU, please open a new thread and be sure to attach all the necessary information so that this can be investigated separately in the interest of clarity.

Thanks a lot!

Any ETA or feature set for the R300 release on Linux?

If it helps my nvidia bug report attached. Using Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. and Ge7950gt with 512Mb RAM. Problem only occurs in Unity 3D. 2D works fine. After latest Ubuntu updates (issued 28 April) the 3D worked perfectly but reverted to old problems after suspending and rewaking. This was similar issue seen on Ubuntu 11.10 after the 295.40 security update. I wanted to see if 2D was affected if I logged out from the buggy 3dD but could not test as could not get back to login screen; had to do a reboot.

I have an Nvidia 8800M GTX in a Clevo M570RU-U laptop and I have been experiencing issues for over a year with the Nvidia drivers.

Severe hangs occur with all drivers newer than 270.41.19 (this was the last one that worked fine).

The hangs happen already at the log-in screen or shortly after logging in, depending on the driver version (I have tried all of them). If I go into a terminal before the hang occurs I see an error message concerning a CPU issue right before the freezing.

Then the computer becomes completely unresponsive and I need to force a power down.

The problem happens with all the Linux distributions I have tried (Debian-based, RetHat-based, Arch-based, etc). However, I have only tried 64-bit versions and therefore the issue might or might not be 64-bit-specific.

The issue is independent of the installation method (deb package, Nvidia bundle, etc) and of the kernel and xorg versions.

The issue is not present in FreeBSD and derivatives and it therefore seems to be Linux-specific.

Driver 270.41.19 is fine and allows me to use CUDA 4.0 (which is what I need the proprietary driver for), the problem is that I have been unable to install this driver for kernels of the 3.x series (in spite of the fact that I tried several workarounds which were supposed to work for kernel 3.0-RC1).

Is anyone else experiencing this issue or is it specific of this laptop model (there are other users of this laptop reporting the same problem here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...01#post2542601)?

Can this be related to some security patch?
