Default Best Linux driver for Quadro FX2700M

My Quadro FX2700M works fine under my current setup (Ubuntu 10.04), the driver is 195.36.24.

Now I'm beginning to test Ubuntu 12.04. The driver is 295.40. I experience a relatively disappointing performance. glxgears reports 3000-3500 FPS, whereas the 195.40 driver is consistently around 7500.

I know glxgears is not a conclusive benchmark, but yet the difference is obvious (just start Googleearth...)

What do you think I should try: revert to the older driver, or search for a more recent one? I have no experience at installing drivers which are not in the repositories.

Thanks in advance. Regards, Daniel
