Maintain Your Privacy by Manually Accepting and Rejecting "Cookies" (nV News)

The Internet is a great place to hang out. As users, we are concerned about our privacy.

One way to maintain your privacy, by finding out who’s trying to store information on your computer with a “cookie”, is to manually accept and reject them.

Configure your favorite browser to process cookies manually. If you “trust” the web site, accept the cookie once, and you’ll be good to go. If you choose not to accept the cookie, then reject it.

If you change your mind later on, you can manually edit the accepted and rejected web sites in your browser settings.

This is a simple way to feel better about browsing the Internet.

As far as cookies, set your browser to default third party cookies to session only. Don't block them outright as it breaks a lot of websites and just leads to frustration. You don't ever have to worry about any prompts or broken websites, and the cookies you do want will remain intact. I am only aware of how to do this with firefox, but as soon as you close your browser almost all useful tracking information is gone.

The remaining useful tracking information comes from flash cookies. However if you configure your browser to default to not play flash content (e.g. noscript, flashblock) then this isn't a problem unless you go out of your way to play flash ads.

Ghostery is also a good addon.
