Default nvidia 9800gt, linux, and nvidia 295.xx crashes

Can anyone comment on the status of this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/973096
periodic lockups, crashes caused by nvidia 295.xx linux drivers with 9800gt and several other cards.

Switching to the opensource nouveau driver solves the problem, albeit with a performance hit.
