Default Changing Graphics card settings

I'm a linux noob. Basically installed linux to learn and also to improve gaming performance on some linux ported games i have. I was wondering how dyu change graphics settings on linux. (like in win2k u just go to control panel/display then advanced settings to access nvidia settings)

That largely depends on the kind of setting you're interested in; some settings can be adjusted using kernel module parameters, some (most) as XFree86 driver options and others as environment variables; the official README describes all of these options/parameters in detail.
