Question How to play S3M sound files under WinXP

I remember to have played most tracker modules sound files that were very common and popular in the ms-dos era. Now I've got a S3M file and none of my windows media players is able to play it. Do you know any windows media player that could do it?. Thanks.

Winamp 2.x has a plugin for those files.

http://classic.winamp.com/plugins/detail.jhtml;$sessionid$PPB2J3TRVG5WPTN241GBCZI?componentId=793 20

EDIT - Actually I don't think you even need that plugin to play them in winamp 2.x it seems to support that file type already. Though the description of the plugin says it "improves" their playback.

Thank you for the quick reply. Any other alternatives? It's been a long time since I used Winamp.

The most accurate players avalible for mod files (xm, it, mod, s3m etc) is Deli player and Modplug player.

modplug is easier to use but deli player is more powerfull and has support for nearly all amiga/pc (atari & c64 formats too) avalible. A search on google and youll find them both.

as a side note, the winamp player routines for mod format songs truly suck bad, no question about it.

Its important to understand that the mod format is nothing like wave and mp3 (witch is a long stereo/mono sound file). Mod format is a song with all the instruments inbedded in the song (kind of like a midi file but with instruments so it sounds exactly the same on every computer, that is if the player is accurate) And that is also the reason those formats is not supported in windows media player...

Accuracy is important with these songs as they contain loads of effects (volume ramping, arpeggio, panning etc) and they all play according to the songs defined speed/ticks per beat and effects applied on notes/sounds. If the player dosent play as the tracker where the song was made in the song will sound bad. But then again one wouldt know if one cant compare... more so if you dont track your own music.

Once again, the winamp mod player routine isnt good, it miss plays a few of my old tracks.
