Post No Flash for Android 4.1, no new installs after August 15

Adobe announced yesterday that its mobile version of Flash is completely unsupported on Android 4.1, and no new downloads of Flash from the Google Play store will be possible after August 15. Until then, installing Flash on devices running Jelly Bean, including the new Nexus 7 tablet and the handful of devices scheduled to be updated in July, is technically possible, but any issues with the player will be left for the user to deal with, not Adobe or the manufacturer.

Adobe announcedin Novemberthat it would stop certifying mobile Flash for new devices, though certified devices running Flash on supported operating systems will still receive bugfixes and security updates through Google Play on an as-needed basis. Certified phones and tablets that receive an upgrade to Android 4.1 may still be able to use Flash, but Adobe recommends that users who update to newer Android versions uninstall the plugin to prevent instability issues. For those who insist on tempting fate, Flash can still be downloaded from Adobe's archive page, but updates will not be available through Google Play.

Mobile Flash has had a troubled history: it has seen the widest support on Android and BlackBerry, but the same performance and battery life concerns that prompted Apple to block the plugin in iOS also contributed to problems in competing operating systems. Adobe is now pushing HTML5 development and packaging of native apps through the Adobe AIR platform, but Flash isn't leaving all tablets just yet: Internet Explorer in Windows 8 and, according to our sources, Windows RT will include an integrated version of the Windows Flash player, though in the Metro environment it will only work for sites on Microsoft's whitelist.
