Default blank screen with kdm and xdm (i have tried other posts !)

I have been trying for days now to get the Nvidia driver (1.0-4496) working on my system.
I have XFree86 4.3.0 r2

Everytime i load kdm or xdm the screen goes blank but the monitor does not go on standby,i have left it
for 30 mins and it still does nothing and i can only get out of it by manually pressing the reset switch on my computer

There was no problem installing the driver, i have consulted the manual and all files seem to be present

I have included Nvidia in my /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4 file and when linux 2.4.20-gentoo-r5 boots
up one of the lines that flashes by is

* using/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4:
Loading module nvidia

I can load kdm or xdm as long as i get /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config to generate my file

as soon as i add

load "glx"
Driver "nvidia"

the problem starts again

I have read many posts about this and have tried the following suggestions

Option "NvAgp" "0"
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "DFP, TV"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT,CRT"

here are my log files

From the XFree86.log file I can see that it does recognize my card correctly , there was also a line
in there that correctly identified the cards BIOS.

i have/had the same problem you describe w/ suse 8.2 and gforce4 mx 440

your kdm.log file has in it stuff like:

(EE) [GLX]: Failed to add GLX extension (NVIDIA XFree86 driver not found)
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0"

this is the same in mine when using the default kdm "boot" to X

until the code gets fixed! here is the workaround i am using
boot into "safe" mode, login as yourself and startx

i posted a thread about this at:

let me know what happens with the "workaround"
