Default Problems with dual monitors on 302.17

After upgrading from Nvidia 295.53 to Nvidia 302.17 on Arch Linux, my dual monitor setup no longer works and I don't seem to have 3D acceleration. (For example, Gnome 3 is falling back to its Gnome 2-style mode.) I have a GeForce 9800 GTS.

Things seem alright at the login screen, but once I'm logged in one screen turns white. I can still move my mouse over to it and see the cursor, but if I try to do anything else, like move a window to that screen, it doesn't work.

Also, every time I start X, my Gnome panel widgets get duplicated. So now I have about 5 of each widget. No idea if this is related.

I've been fooling with various nvidia-settings and nvidia-xconfig options, but haven't gotten anything working. Help, please?

Could you please run nvidia-bug-report.sh as root and attach the resulting nvidia-bug-report.log.gz file here?

Hmm, that's pretty strange. Your log file looks like things are mostly working: you have two X screens that are initializing at 1680x1050, which is slightly odd since your xorg.conf file only names one screen in the ServerLayout section.

Do you intend to create two separate X screens, or would one X screen using both your display devices work? I've had trouble with multiple X screens on some recent desktop environments, so that might be worth a shot. I would recommend replacing the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf with this:
Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "ModeDebug"
EndSection
If things still don't work the way you want using that, please generate and attach a new bug report file.

Sorry for the slow response. I've been travelling and haven't been using the computer with this problem, but now I'm back to it.

I wasn't able to start GDM with the xorg.conf you provided. I got the (not very informative) error:

Code:
gdm-binary[655]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 1.496617 seconds
gdm-binary[655]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.029211 seconds
gdm-binary[655]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.019005 seconds
gdm-binary[655]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.018893 seconds
gdm-binary[655]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.035144 seconds
gdm-binary[655]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.035144 seconds
gdm-binary[655]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors
If I check the X server log as suggested, I see:

Code:
[    40.039] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sat Jul  7 14:40:42 2012
[    40.107] (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
[    40.107] (==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"
[ 40.215] Parse error on line 3 of section Screen in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
        This section must have only one of either Identifier or Driver line.
[ 40.215] (EE) Problem parsing the config file
[ 40.215] (EE) Error parsing the config file
[    40.215]
Is it possible you made a mistake in your post?

Yes, my apologies! The section type should be "Device", not "Screen".

Alright, I tried with "Device" and that fixed the error, but I'm still seeing the same thing I saw with my old xorg.conf. A new bug report file is attached.

Oh, it's picking up the "DualSreen" layout from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf instead of the configuration in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Could you please try moving that file somewhere else or deleting it?
