Default Display Brightness

Is there a way to alter the brightness / contrast in the linux display drivers? both on the desktop and in 3D games, etc..

my monitor is very dark, and games like q3 where you cant adjust the brightness are almost black and way too dark to play.

Sure, and it isn't even specific to these drivers. What a deal. OK, anyway, use xgamma:

xgamma -gamma 1.7

Experiment with the 1.7 value. 1.0 is the default, higher numbers give brighter pictures.

Better still, Gamma is an option in the Monitor section of your XF86Config(-4), so once you've decided what the best gamma value is for your monitor, just add the line

Gamma <value>

to that section and you're away.
