From gamespot.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Following earlier indications from Half-Life 2's publisher, Valve says the game will not make a September 30 ship date.

In late July, Vivendi Universal Games said that Half-Life 2 would not ship on September 30, the release date Valve had announced at E3. Yet, in the days following VU Games' announcement, Valve unofficially told its fans that it would stick to the date. Valve has now admitted that the game will not ship next week.

As for official word on Half-Life 2's release schedule, VU Games' Amy Farris backed up the developer's statement, saying, "I can confirm that Valve announced this week that Half-Life 2 will ship for the holiday season, rather than September 30th."

I have a feeling nVidia had something to do with it. Just a little.

December? Upon reading the ATI9800XT reviews, they mention that the card will be available in October with H-L2 retail in the box. If the game is not ready, then Valve will be delaying ATI. If H-L2 was delayed in order to fix nVidia issues, then nVIDIA is delaying ATI!

The press release states you get a voucher for HL2.

When HL2 is released you mail it in and pay shipping, then you pay tax, then you pay import charges and then you get your game

I doubt the Nvidia optimisations will have any impact on the game's release date. They've already finished the optimisations for it (and I doubt the whole "Nvidia made them delay HL2" rumors are true, even Gearbox would be more likely to have something to do with the delay at this point). In fact, what if it was ATI who forced them to delay HL2 in order to coincide with the release of the XT series? Odd how everyone always misses the most obvious possible reason. Personally, I think they simply couldn't get the game done on time, so they delayed it *gasp!*. But didn't they specificly say the benchmark was going to be released today? Looks like Valve is as good at release dates as Blizzard is. Oh well, maybe the extra time will help ensure that HL2 doesn't become another Steam...
