Default 2.6-test5 module load - but X wont start

Hi All,

I'm trying to get going on the 2.6-test5 kernel with the nvidia driver on a higrade laptop with builtin Nvidia Gforce4 440 64M but I'm having a problem.

Following the details from www.minion.de I've installed 2.6-test5, extracted, patched and made the nvidia module + installed it.

Now if I boot on 2.6-test5, I can modprobe the nvidia driver with the standard message in the logs of tainting the kernel, but when I startx it drops out with the following error :-

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Looking in the XFree log, the relevant part listed for the error seems to be :-

(II) Setting vga for screen 0.
(II) Loading sub module "vgahw"
(II) LoadModule: "vgahw"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a

(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:

If I compare that to the log output from running on kernel 2.4.22-pre3 I get :-

(II) Setting vga for screen 0.
(II) Loading sub module "vgahw"
(II) LoadModule: "vgahw"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a

(--) NVIDIA(0): Display device DFP-0: maximum pixel clock at 32 bpp: 350 MHz
(II) Loading sub module "ddc"
(II) LoadModule: "ddc"
etc.

The same error happens if I modprobe intel-agp before the nvidia module.

lsmod shows the module loaded and it can be unloaded and loaded again.

If I boot back in to 2.4.22-pre X all works fine again with the nvidia module.

Any ideas where I'm going wrong, I've done a search but not found any similar problems.

I think it is permission problems on the install libraries from nvidia
Go into /usr/X11R6/lib

chmod 0666 libXvMCN*

This usually means that the nvidia kernel module was not loaded. Make sure you rename the nvidia.o to nvidia.ko since this is the new extension which is used for modules.

/lib/modules/2.6.0-test5/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko

It's fixed, thanks for your replies and needless to say it was down to my own stupidity.

After looking at the Libraries in /usr/X11R6/lib I noticed the symlinks linking to version 4363 not 4496 - which meant I had succesfully compiled and installed the driver but not installed any of the other libraries or Xfree modules. Doh !

After a quick install everything is now running fine.

Next time I'll remember to check I've update the current running system to the version I'm trying to recompile for.

Thanks for all your help.
