Default Not Coming Up --> Mandrake Linux 9.2 RC2 with 4496 drivers

Hello, I'm not a linux Newb, I've been using it exclusivly for the last 2 years, I've used both redhat and mandrake on and off alternativly during that time.

I'm having a bit of difficulty getting the 4496 driver to start with the latest mandrake release, which is 9.2 RC2

Installation: I run the installation script, the installer tells me there are NO precompiled kernel modules for my kernel, fine, it then asks to search the nvidia ftp site for one, fine go ahead, it can't find one, the kernel module will have to be built, fine, I select continue the build proceeds without a hitch.

I exit the "successfully completed" install, I punch up emacs and modify the device to read "nvidia" from "nv" GLcore and dri are not even in the XF86Config-4 file the load glx line is already there.

The problem: System boots the 5 minute delay happens, the white "nvidia" logo pops up and then the screen goes totally dark, I waited a minute expecting the login gui,, it didn't show up, I didn't give it as long as the five minute delay I had right before. I simply rebooted and went into the console and changed Xfree so that I could use the machine.

What could be happening?

Here are the relevant files:

Sorry for the multi post but the character limit is 15k.

Please note that the "nv" in the devices ection has been changed back to allow me to use the system, I didn't run into problems with it like that, the problems occurred when I ran with "nvidia"
Does anybody have a clue here?

Andy?

How can I get the GLX driver to load?

Is there going to be a precompiled kernel module added for Mandrake 9.2, I would suppose so, it IS the other major linux label.

BTW, just installed MDK 9.2 RC2

This particular mandrake is good enough that it makes me want to pay to support them.

Pay to get a club membership granted not buy a boxed set.

I think there are some major problems wrong with the NVidia driver set 4496 and XFREE86 4.3.0. I am using Slackware 9.1 (just released) which has XFREE86 4.3.0 like what you have. I can get the driver to work in X/GNOME but there are huge memory leaks. I lose about 16k to 64k of memory per several seconds. Within a few hours the system crawls as it runs out of memory. I notice in your XFREE86.log and also in mine that everything is compiled for 4.3.0 except for libglx.so which shows it was compiled for 4.0.2. That probably isn't good. The libglx.so is a prepackaged proprietary file from NVidia, so we can't even recompile it ourselves. This is what a "Tainted kernel" really means when a driver loads.

BTW, I have a Dell i8200 laptop with GEForce4 440GO AGP 64MB. Here is my comment stripped XF86Config file:

Not that it helps you much, but I was confused about the memory leak thing. "free -m" shows memory being sucked into the cache pool but it is still available. I also got MS Fonts to work correctly for things like web browsing and OpenOffice1.1rc5.

BTW, I highly recommend this site, if you want MS-Fonts for reading other's docs:
http://homepage.mac.com/mpeters/coreweblinux/

build ttmkfdir chkfontpath coreweb cabextract
Run chkfontpath to see where the current ones are.
Run ttmkfdir in dir with ttf files. cp fonts.scale fonts.dir
cp the whole dir to new path where other fonts are
Update XF86Config with new path and also do
chkfontpath --add -f new_path
restart X

Here is my latest XF86Config:

Unhappy Same in RH9

Hello!

I have quite the same problem on my RH9, mening the X doesn't come up. I also have XFree86 4.3.0.
The installer went ok, then when I start X the screen the NVidia logio apears then the screen gets black and I have to reset.
Sometimes it shows just a little bit of the gnome starting logo but then it frezes also.

I attached /var/log/XFree86.0
and here it is the XFree86Config

============================

# If you have a US Microsoft Natural keyboard, you can use:
# Option "XkbModel" "microsoft"

# Then to change the language, change the Layout setting.
# For example, a german layout can be obtained with:
# Option "XkbLayout" "de"
# or:
# Option "XkbLayout" "de"
# Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
#
# If you'd like to switch the positions of your capslock and

I simply rebooted and went into the console and changed Xfree so that I could use the machine.

What could be happening?

Here are the relevant files:

(They are in the lower message)
you have read the readme havn't you where all this is explained of course?

Q: X takes a long time to start (possibly several minutes). What can
I do?

A: Most of the startx delay problems we have found are caused by incorrect
data in video BIOSes about what display devices are possibly connected
or what i2c port should be used for detection. You can work around
these problems with the XF86Config option "IgnoreDisplayDevices"
(please see the description in (app-d) APPENDIX D: XF86CONFIG OPTIONS).
the log from the nv driver isnt going to help us help you, that goes for ionutfrujina too

please attach the xfree log using the nvidia driver to your post

and ionutfrujina:

the reason yours dies is because it cannot find a mouse you have said exists
