Default Linux IA32 driver downloads as text...

I'm forced to download via windows 98SE, I use Opera 7.20. It might be a shame, but it is not yet a crime.

On this nVidia page, the text says
Quote:
STEP 2: Download the Driver File
Download - NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run
I click the link and get a new page written in text, starting with
Quote:
#! /bin/sh
skip=763
CRCsum=2221737062
MD5=e61361e0d1263c1464f7aef50aea8112
...
...
I see the familiar #!/bin/sh opening for a shell script. Written in plain text. What? My confusion is that I'm being instructed by the first nVidia page that I am supposed to get a .run file:
  • The string for the link title says it is a .run file.
    When I mouse over the the link it says it is a run file.
    When I right click and 'save as', I get NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run.txt
Things are still linked up ok, over at the server, yes?
I'm worried that I would get a corrupted download.

It indicates a broken browser. Browsers should not interpret files, add their own extensions, etc.
This was also a wellknown problem in Netscape, which would e.g. uncompress .gz files without asking you.

Maybe you can find another method of saving the file, like shift-click on the link, or right-click the link and pick some "save" option out of the context menu.

.run is not a recognized MIME type in Windows. You probably just have to grab the file, it'll rename it automatically to what it thinks is the closest match (In this case .txt), and you can just remove the .txt from it.

If your download weighs in at around 8 megabytes, you probably got all the data. Try renaming the file.

.run isn't a MIME type.
text/plain or text/html are MIME types.

The confusion arises because Windows uses file extensions for purposes that overlap those of MIME types. And because the OS uses extensions at the lower level and the Internet browsers use MIME types, confusion about the type of the file and the needed action results.

This is the mechanism by which a lot of Internet- and mail viruses operate.

A file like this should have MIME type application/octet-stream. The browser then won't treat it as text, won't show it in the window when a link is clicked, and will present a file dialog to save the file to disk.

For pe1chl and darkhelmet03:

I will try renaming the file, since that seems feasable in my situation.

For Soul-crusher:
Embedded into the file is an md5sum, I can check md5sums with a Windows program called, oddly enough, md5sum.exe. I've used that program many times and I trust it - over 40 ISO disc image downloads are fine as a result of matching md5sums generated by that windows version. I'd prefer to check the md5sum on this driver before I bother to trust it, in light of the troubles I have seen with my recent nVIdia downloads.

Problem is, since the md5sum is embedded into the file, the file now has a different md5sum which includes the added data. I can strip added portions out and recalculate the md5sum, if I know where to strip. Any idea where the original file boundaries lie? Or better still, is there an official md5sum for the downloaded file, claculation based on what I downloaded?

For all: Yeah, I know, you all did help me, but as a point of fact, nobody directly addressed the one question I asked!

So, by inferred deductions, the server file is not misdirected or anything.

Try using --check when you run the package. It should look something like this:
root@localhost nvidia # ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run --check
check sums and md5 sums are ok

And to answer your second question, yes, the link on the nVidia webpage is fine.
