Default Nvidia Driver, redhat 9 *DETAILS*

In the spirit of keeping it simple, I am posting only details about the system, video card, drivers, and symptoms here.

This is in reference to this thread about our ongoing problems.

So,

System:
Redhat 9 (stock everything)
Abit KT7A motherboard (VIA KT133 chipset)
Geforce FX 5600 Ultra (128MB)
Nvidia drivers 4496 & 4363

Symptom:
Hard lockup after login (gui login), and occasionally at login prompt. No way to get out except for a hard reboot, or ssh and kill X remotely.

I have tracked my particular problem down to the AGP Speed.
2X AGP in bios (latest bios) works fine and dandy.
4X AGP in bios locks up the machine every time.

My system:

Red Hat 9 standard kernel

Epox 8K9A9I KT400 chipset 8X AGP
Gainward Gf4 MX440 128Mb DDR
nVidia driver 4496 (installed by the book)

Symptom.

X locks mostly when a program tries to use 3D hardware acceleration, sometimes the mouse still responds, sometimes not.

Sometimes you leave the computer alone without screensaver, and X hangs anyway.

The OS still works in backgrond.

Setting the speed of AGP from 8X to 4X doesn't help

BIOS & XF86setup is properly configured

pdavid: This problem is often times caused by a poor motherboard BIOS (VIA is plagued by these issues). Consult them first and get a BIOS upgrade if one is available.

VMUNIX: Try disabling ACPI (Not APIC) and APM. Power management is known to be buggy all around (In the BIOS, in the Linux kernel, and in the nVidia drivers), but most mainboard vendors tailor their crummy implementations to suit Windows users so that it's at least stable. And I hate to sound like an anti-VIA troll, but it would probably do you a lot of good to get a BIOS upgrade for your KT400.

I thought that I had mentioned that the bios is the latest one offered for that board?
At any rate, we wanted this thread to be just for the nvidia lockup problems that a bunch of us were having. Check the link in the first post again

Oops, I see you responded to me in the other thread. You know, you could just bump the old one to keep things simple

Sorry for the confusion, I've just been skimming through and trying to offer some quick answers during 'study breaks.'

Default Kt7A quirks

I know you 've been down a lot of paths with no joy, but .... the KT7A board has a lot of quirks.

One of them was the pci #1 slot sharing the IRQ with the AGP slot. Problems with AGP 4x vs 2x. Another was ......

A good resource on the Via based board is the un-official FAQ now at Sudhain Hardware. Look at the Kt7A FAQ and look in the video section to see if there's something there that may help.

My guess it that you've hit one of those quirks ;-(

Good luck - (My Kt7A-Raid board works ok but then I don't push it much anymore - got another box with an Nforce2 board )
