Talking newbie needs help

Hello!
Since a few days i try to install nVidia drivers 4496 on SuSE Linux 7.3 Prof. I ran SuSE YOU and installed "NVIDIA_GLX 7" and "NVIDIA_KERNEL 7" but i cant install the drivers from the run file "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496..."
If the Setup wants to compile a kernel theres alyays the message, that the kernel-compile-header is missing. If setup asks to download a kernel from ftp://download.nvidia.com, it cant find a kernel. I tried to install with the versions 4349 and 4363 too, but unsuccessfull. Please help!

I'm not sure how SuSE does it, but with Redhat and Mandrake if you don't install 'development' packages you usually need to find the kernel-headers package, GCC, and possibly some others before you can install driver modules.

The drivers that you got from SuSE don't work?

ok, yesterday i installed the "kernel-source" package from the Linux CDs, but now in the Setup the message appears:

ERROR: Unable to compile kernel

does anyone know how to fix this?

edit:
No, the RPMs from SuSE dont work, and i suggess these are no drivers because if i install them, i cant activate 3D Acceleration or use 24Bit Color-Depth.

its a fact 3D accell and 24bit color is not possible.
put your colors on 16bit and try to enable 3D support with SAX2 of YaST2.

cant install the rpm's?
try opening a new TTY with CTRL + ALT F2
login as root.
type INIT 3, ok now your booted into init 3 without a xserver operating.

now CTRL + C

go to the directory where your 2 nvidia rpm's are.

( reminder )
dont forget to uninstall the official SuSE nvidia (dummy) drivers FIRST.

ok done that?
now install the nvidia rpm's :
rpm -Uhv kernel rpm.
rpm -Uhv glx rpm

ok did they install?
type:
INIT 5

blam your on x server login screen again.
now try to config your graphics card with SAX2 or YaST2

(reminder)
did you install the newest XFree86 ??
you need that for the newest nvidia drivers.
you can find the SuSE XFree86 update rpm's on the suse website under downloads.

download those all.
and install them with (in INIT 3) command.
you need to be in the directory where you downloaded all the xfree86 rpm's.
type:
rpm -Uhv --force --nodeps *.rpm
everything will be installed in 1 time.

hope i have helped you a bit.
