Default slowness with gtk2/gnome2 with nvidia's latest drivers

Ever since I moved up to the 4xxx series of drivers, gtk2/gnome2 stuff is VERY slow with the drivers. if i go back to latest 3xxx driver, it gets normal speed again.

i've seen other people complain about this, HELP?

Default X's driver is faster!

I just switched back to X's nv driver, and it's faster! this is insane, people keep saying this is just me, but it's not. in galeon2, browsing and scrolling webpages is SO much smoother and faster with X's nvidia driver. i have reported over and over extreme slowdowns with gtk2/gnome2 and nvidia(w/my geforce2) ever since moving from 3xxx driver to 4xxx driver.

help?
