Post Project Eternity breaks Kickstarter record for game funding

Game makers hoping to make an impression on Kickstarter have a new high-water mark to shoot for. Obsidian's Project Eternity today set a new fundraising record for gaming software on the popular crowdfunding service, passing $3.5 million with just hours left to go in its campaign.

Nearly 68,000 people have contributed at least $20 to get a copy of the open-world RPG, which draws upon talent from developers who have worked on titles such asFallout, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Arcanum, and Temple of Elemental Evil. The project surpasses the $3.2 million in contibutions raised by Double Fine's Adventure Game Kickstarter back in March, but falls well short of the $8.6 million brought in by the Android-based Ouya hardware.

Project Eternity met its initial $1.1 million funding goal a little over 24 hours after launching last month, a reception Obsidian's Josh Sawyer told Ars Technicahe was "stunned" by. "Before we went live, I figured we had a 50/50 chance of hitting our funding in a month," he said. "To hit it in a little over a day was something I never thought would happen."
