Post SLI ceased working in Ubuntu 12.10, Help!

Hi all,

When I replaced SuSE linux with Ubuntu 12.04 and then installed the nvidia driver, I was able to get SLI to work. However, I upgraded to 12.10 yesterday, and to my dismay SLI stopped working.

My LSPCI is as follows:
Code:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C77 [nForce 750a SLI] (rev a2)
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT200 [GeForce GTX 260] (rev a1)
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GT200 [GeForce GTX 260] (rev a1)
However, in nvidia-settings, I see that the 750a has somehow shoehorn itself in as GPU-1, between GPU-0 and GPU-2, which are the GTX260s.

In Ubuntu 12.04, it didn't exhibit this behavior. Instead, it managed to set up the two GTX260s as GPU-0 and GPU-1 respectively, and finally the 750a as GPU-2.

I'm interested to know if there is a way I can force the 12.04 nvidia drivers enumeration method onto the driver and make the 750a GPU-2 again. I noticed that the driver will only activate SLI if the two GPUs are enumerated in sequence before the 750a.

Can you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

My xorg.conf is as follows: http://pastebin.com/jpr2fQny

My Xorg.0.log is as follows: http://pastebin.com/QJQ64cZT

Wait, I just noticed something weird:
Code:
[ 27.250] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Invalid SLI configuration 3 of 4:
[ 27.250] (EE) NVIDIA(0): GPUs:
[ 27.250] (EE) NVIDIA(0): 1) NVIDIA GPU at PCI:3:0:0
[ 27.250] (EE) NVIDIA(0): 2) NVIDIA GPU at PCI:4:0:0
[ 27.250] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Errors:
[ 27.250] (EE) NVIDIA(0): - Unsupported GPU
[ 27.250] (EE) NVIDIA(0): - Chipset not approved for SLI
Why would it flag that as invalid? as noted in my lspci, these two are GeForce GTX260s, and the chipset is a NForce 750a SLI!

I'm stumped.

I'd suggest running the bug report utility and sending it along with a description of the problem to linux-bugs@nvidia.com.

Well, I sent in a bug report. I hope NVidia fixes this. It's annoying.

I think I managed to fix it!

I looked around and decided to try the xorg edgers PPA. They have a newer version of Xorg and the bleeding edge 310.14 beta drivers. Figuring that I have nothing to lose (except the possibility of these two GTX260s and maybe the motherboard itself), I gave it a shot. And it worked!

Code:
[ 28.098] (**) NVIDIA(0): Option "SLI" "AFR"
[ 28.098] (**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling RENDER acceleration
[ 28.098] (**) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA SLI alternate frame rendering selected.
[ 28.098] (**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling 2D acceleration
[ 31.283] (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA SLI enabled.
[ 31.552] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Display (Acer T230H (DFP-1)) does not support NVIDIA 3D Vision
[ 31.552] (II) NVIDIA(GPU-0): stereo.
[ 31.554] (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU GeForce GTX 260 (GT200) at PCI:4:0:0 (GPU-0)
[ 31.554] (--) NVIDIA(0): Memory: 917504 kBytes
[ 31.554] (--) NVIDIA(0): VideoBIOS: 62.00.4c.00.01
[ 31.554] (II) NVIDIA(0): Detected PCI Express Link width: 16X
[ 31.554] (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU GeForce GTX 260 (GT200) at PCI:3:0:0 (GPU-1)
[ 31.554] (--) NVIDIA(0): Memory: 917504 kBytes
[ 31.554] (--) NVIDIA(0): VideoBIOS: 62.00.4c.00.01
[ 31.554] (II) NVIDIA(0): Detected PCI Express Link width: 16X

So yeah, anyone using Ubuntu Quantal and having trouble getting SLI up, if you're feeling lucky, give this PPA a try. Understand that there are consequences for using beta software tho.
