Default Mandrake 9.1 + nvidia driver + X = blank screen

I've been reading the boards for a while, as well as many other linux message boards look for an answer to this problem.

No one seems to have solved it yet, so I'll post about it again!

Mandrake 9.1
Gainward GeForce4 MX440 SE
Athlon XP 1800+
Can't remember off the top of my head what mobo/chipset

The "nv" driver works to the point where I can use X. If I switch over to the nvidia driver and try to start X, I get a black screen. The last thing in my log file is:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1024x768"

I've tried every suggestion I've seen on these boards up till now. I'm guessing that since this is a common problem, there's gotta be someone who's solved it.

I've been struggling for days with this. The only reason I even need the nvidia driver is for TV-out. I'm about to try using nvtv, but I'd prefer to get this driver working.

fstrat94,

I had a very similar problem. I also tried several solutions from the boards and a few of my own. Unfortunately, I was never able to fix it and I just switched back to nv. I dont think the installer actually works on some systems.

Default UPDATE

Turns out this was a hardware problem. I was having other odd problems. So I went out, spent 60 bucks on a new graphics card, and bam, it works!
