Unhappy Cannot install driver on several kernels

Hi,

My hardware is a Pentium IV hyper-threaded with a Quadro 550 XGL. My system is a RedHat 9 and 4496 nvidia driver.

Pre-requisite: redhat has installed two kernels, a single-threaded one and a SMP one which takes profit of my hyper-threaded processor. I want to experiment my software with both kernels.

The problem: the nvidia driver seems unable to install itself on both kernels. If I specify to use the nvidia driver in /etc/X11/XF86Config, only the last kernel where I installed the driver will work.

As a consequence, each time
I want to move to the other kernel, I must set my inittab level to 3, then reboot, then reinstall the nvidia driver, then set back the initab to 5 again, then reboot.

Painful.

Default

Use the advanced features of the installer to extract the tarball, then compile and insert the module only for the second kernel, while the installer is already run for the other one.

./NVIDIA-installer-vers.run --help

should get you going.
