Default no nvidia* files on /dev - problems

The standard nv driver from mdk works nicely but can not open GL application.

So I downloaded and install the latest driver version: 1.0-4496 but not working.

The installation log as follow :

I have done the installation on procedure (change the nv to nvidia)
Looking at the Readme file, I came accross the following text:

Problems will arise if applications use the wrong version of a library.
This can be the case if there are either old libGL libraries or stale
symlinks left lying around. If you think there may be something awry
in your installation, check that the following files are in place
(these are all the files of the NVIDIA Accelerated Linux Driver Set,
plus their symlinks):

/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o

/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so.x.y.z
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so -> libglx.so.x.y.z

/usr/lib/libGL.so.x.y.z
/usr/lib/libGL.so.x -> libGL.so.x.y.z
/usr/lib/libGL.so -> libGL.so.x

/usr/lib/libGLcore.so.x.y.z
/usr/lib/libGLcore.so.x -> libGLcore.so.x.y.z

/lib/modules/`uname -r`/video/NVdriver, or
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver

Installation of the NVIDIA_kernel package will also create the /dev files:

crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 0 Feb 15 17:21 nvidia0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 1 Feb 15 17:21 nvidia1
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 2 Feb 15 17:21 nvidia2
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 3 Feb 15 17:21 nvidia3
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 255 Feb 15 17:21 nvidiactl

So I checked it out and found that not all file listed above are present on my system. Especially I can not find the nvidia* folder on my /dev.

I suspect this must be the installation error, so I reinstalled the driver but still same problems.

Oh yeah... when I started X, the screen will fade for a couple seconds then back to console while saying no /dev/nvidia0 found. After that the system will hang. Even with raw booting method it wont work except to press the reset button.

Anybody know how to fix this?
How can I check whether i'm using wrong version library?
Should I create the nvidia0 folder manually?
Should I symlink some files above manually and if yes to where???

Thanks

Did you install the drivers as root? You need to be root in order to create device files in the /dev directory. Switch to root and type the following commands:

mknod /dev/nvidia0 c 195 0
mknod /dev/nvidia1 c 195 1
mknod /dev/nvidia2 c 195 2
mknod /dev/nvidia3 c 195 3
mknod /dev/nvidiactl c 195 255

Then try to start X again. If it works, then the rest of the driver is installed cleanly. If not, then install the drivers as root and try again.

Yes, I even install it twice as root, but still the same result.
And yesterday I reinstall my linux - hoping that maybe if I install it with "clean" kernel it may works, but I was dissappointed with the result.

Here, I give you the log of my XFree (with verbose 5) AFTER installing it from scratch. Maybe you could help me analyze what's wrong w/my system?

I'm starting to think that this problem caused by by motherboard, because my MB (ECS P4V266) has onboard video card : S3 Savage4, onboard audio

Sorry I just realized something from my log...

Did you see the following :
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"

(II) Module mouse: vendor="The XFree86 Project"

Module class: XFree86 XInput Driver

The module nvidia and glx is compiled for XFree version 4.02 while the other module said they're compiled for 4.3.0.
Probably this is the problem??????

No, it's this:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

The kernel module isn't even loaded when you try to start X. You have to load it or else the drivers won't work.

To get it to load, switch to root and add the following line to the file /etc/rc.d/rc.local (if you use a Red Hat derivative):

/sbin/modprobe -q NVdriver

This will make certain that the kernel module is available for the X server.

Default please clarify which "nvidia" mod, nv's or X's?

Are you talking about two drivers called "nvidia", one for X and one for the kernel?

In my rc's I insmod nvidia.ko 1.0-4496 version of
/lib/modules/2.6.0/kernel/drivers/char/agp/agpgart.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.0/kernel/drivers/char/agp/nvidia-agp.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.0/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko

for any that don't load automatically, one is "nvidia".

Then X loads OK but it loads "nv" not "nvidia", does that need to be changed to "nvidia"?

Default nvidia_drv.o for X

/usr/src/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nv_drv.o

Are what I have now, so I must copy the 1.0-4496 latest nvidia_drv.o to the X11R6 path,
then edit /etc//X11/SF86Config-4 to load "nvidia" instead of "nv", correct?

Otherwise I guess I have the right gl glx dri fb X drivers, or are there better ones?

The kernel driver should be placed in your kernel module directory, in /lib, during the install. If you compiled it by pulling the tarball out of the .run installer, then move it to your kernel modules directory.

/etc/XF86Config (for XFree86 4.2 or later I believe) should have the line:
driver "nvidia"

rather than:
driver "nv"

(you don't need to copy over any X drivers in the X install /usr/X11R6, the nvidia.o or nvidia.ko should be in your kernel drivers dir in /lib)

insmod nvidia
lsmod

(you should now show an 'nvidia' module loaded, if X is started with the proper driver line in the config, it will then use this module)

If you're using an older XFree86 then you should be using XF86Config-4, but the same applies for the module name.

Default nvidia mod

To use kernel 2.6.0 on debian, I have to --extract-only the nvidia files, patch the diff file from http://www.minion.de/nvidia.html, make, make install, insmod the kernel mods.

I copied the nvidia_drv.o which does get compiles but not installed. I copied it to the XR11R6 place where nv_drv.o is and those
are called "nvidia" and "nv" by X.

I didn't insmod the X nvidia_drv.o, I just put "nvidia" in /etc/X11/XFree86Config-4 file.

Crash.

I'll try insmod [fullpath]nvidia_drv.o then X

Unless NVIDIA has changed the name of their kernel module, then the appropriate command to load the kernel driver for NVIDIA cards is:

/sbin/modprobe NVdriver

Anything else won't work with the XFree86 userspace module.

Default nvidia_drv.o for X 4.0 won't work

The kernel module is

/usr/src/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2/usr/src/nv/nvidia.ko

which gets copied to

/lib/modules/2.6.0/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko

so insmod that works

then the X module is

/usr/src/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o

which gets copied to

/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o

then it gets loaded by X if we change "nv" to "nvidia" in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or equivalent.

Using "nv" or "nvidia" in that file refers to nv_drv.o or nvidia_drv.o

If I use "nv" for X, X's GL mods load, but I haven't tested gl apps. Everything 2D works beautifully, realplayer and such.

If I use "nvidia" the X log says nvidia is compiled for X 4.0 which is WRONG. If true, that would explain hard lockups of linux when nvidia mod is loaded in X 4.2.1

It is probably necessary to download X 4.2.1 source and convince the nvidia make to use that for X libs.
