One more thing i would like to add...

Using the Gunmetal "Benchmark" is Just plain WRONG. It is so clearly Nvidia dare i say it.. um.. biased its not even funny. This is not a case where one card is just better than the other like in some of the other games. This is a game developed entirely on Nvidia hardware for Nvidia hardware..

It is rather disturbing that reviewers cant see that. I say Can it.. I dont care if someday ATi pulls a win or not.. Can it..

I like how he says he takes back what he says about NV and PS2.0 shading because of inreased gunemtal scores. SOmebody should show him the line in the readme that says the game only uses 1.1 pixel shaders

Totally agreed! Some games just should never be used as benchmarks, using Gunmetal is about the equivelant of using an nVidia tech demo.

And I don't think I'd call it "reclaiming their position as mainstream leader" so much as "making a decent showing at the midstream section" because the 5700U is no 9600XT killer, not by a long shot.

It's good, but it remains to be seen as to how good and which is going to take that market segment.

Jackie told me that the 5700U won't be competive when juxtaposed with the 9600xt and the newest games that are released without vendor specific optimizations (maxpayne2 as a great example).

Jackie also said that the 5700U isn't any better than a 9600xt let alone a 9700pro or a 9800nonpro.

Jackie is Ha Nostri and she knew pontius pilate, guess what that means?

Some things are sacred and VGA performance isn't one of them, that's why I prefer coffee.

Funny you should say that as ATi hardware runs their ("NV") demos better then their cards

I am quite impressed with the 9600XT abit as it can stand it's own with a card that has over 4.8GB extra bandwith for it's use.

It's kind of refreshingly different.
It's not competitive at all in AA/AF or in PS 2.0 so in truth it still sucks just like all the FX cards do.

Ditto.

It may be compettive in direct8 and 7 modes but for games that use PS2.0 such as halflife2 and halo the card fails to be competive. That also means it's not as futureproof as ATI cards and I think that might *just* be a bit of a negative point for a card that costs $300 that is not acceptable.

The fx5700u costs $200.

It's competitive in AA speed (tho AA quality is not as good), AF speed it's not as fast but then again the AF quality is superior on the NV cards.

By reviewing most of the benchmarks on Anand's, Tom's, and HotHardware, it's apparent that the FX5700 runs most games as fast or faster than the 9600XT. Yes, there are a few that the XT runs better, but there are more that the FX5700 runs faster.

As for PS2.0 speed, we have yet to see a PS2.0 game with an NV3x optimized mixed mode path running with the new 52.16 compiler. Will be interesting to see when HL2 comes out how the cards stand up, as HL2 should meet that criteria.

*cough*

define NV3x optimized--OH WAIT. the 52.16 drivers simply make PS2.0 things NV3x optimized automagically.

so, no, the PS2.0 speed simply isn't as fast.
