Default nforce sound. strange thing.

i have a asus A7N266-E board with nforce chipset. It works beautifully under windows. The sound is real great.
First off all kudos to the nvidia team for the great graphics driver. but the nforce chipset driver does strange things:

If i just start linux and then run xmms. i get sound in only two speakers. but if i do a 'modprobe -rv nvaudio' followed with 'modprobe -v nvaudio' i get sound in 4 satellite speakers!!! still no 5.1.

i have tried alsa drivers too but could not get 5.1 working. i have checked this forum for all related messages but am unable to get the thing working. people seem to be getting 5.1 but with center channel wandering. but i get only two channels!

my dmesg output:
Nvidia + AC97 Audio, version 0.24, 11:49:27 Oct 12 2003
Nvaudio: in Funcction Nvaudio_init_module
PCI: Enabling device 00:06.0 (0005 -> 0007)
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 00:06.0 to 64
Nvaudio: NVIDIA nForce1 Audio found at IO 0xe000 and 0xe100, IRQ 11
Nvaudio: Audio Controller supports 6 channels.
NVaudio: Defaulting to base 2 channel mode.
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: 0x8384:0x7609 (SigmaTel STAC9721/23)
Nvaudio: only 48Khz playback available.
Nvaudio: AC'97 codec 0 supports AMAP, total channels = 2
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: 0x8384:0x7608 (SigmaTel STAC9708)
Nvaudio: only 48Khz playback available.
Nvaudio: AC'97 codec 1, total channels = 6

my modules.conf contains:
alias eth1 nvnet
alias sound-slot-1 nvaudio
alias usb-interface usb-ohci
options nvaudio spdif_status=0
alias char-major-195 nvidia

can somebody please suggest a way to get 5.1 running under linux (even with center wandering...) or alteast to get the 4 channels o/p without having to do modprobe manually each time.

Thanks.

Default Well..

I cant help you with the problem directly but I know there are a lot of Sound etc. issues that will be fixed in the next driver release.

I however dont know when this driver will be released.
About 1-2 Weeks ago I emailed nVidia and they said there are some things to "clean up" before they can release the driver.

Thanks for the response buddy.

The NVIDIA download site states about the current nforce driver release as:

Release Highlights for 1.0-0261:

* Added kernel patch to support nForce GART
* Added "spdif_status" module parameter to audio driver to enable/disable S/PDIF support for compatability
* Fixed bug in audio driver that was causing MSI nForce board to only use 2 channels
...

does anybody know what the issue was and is it fully resolved or is still there?

well we shall wait for the new nforce drivers and hope they turn out to be as good as the graphics ones.

Default Unsure

There are tons of things that do not work properly yet, also look at the date... June 11th, thats a eternety ago.
Linux simply isnt a top priority thing driver wise.

I just hope they will clean up fast and release them before we all grow grey hair here.
