mcortz_2000: Actually I'm having a hard time finding review material to back up what you said. I can see the 2.4ghz 533fsb inching out an overall victory when using expensive RDRAM memory but not when using 333mhz DDR. Can anybody point me to some material so I can edju-m'kate myself? Oh, I should probably include the 1.8ghz (1.73ghz oc'd to 1.8ghz) in this comparison as they currently cost the same as the 1.6ghz Northwood cores (~$120). Is it just me (could very well be that I'm just not finding them) or are there a surprising lack of Athlon XP w/ KT333 vs. Pentium 4 533mhz / 333mhz DDR comparisons out there? Seems suspicious...

savyj: I agree that the performance is really close but there is a difference. The other thing u have to realize is only certain DDR setups will do so. Some will not but we all know that already. The facts are simply:
P4 runs cooler..........
P4 systems run quieter..........
VIA chipsets are not as stable as P4 based chipsets(not all P4 chipsets but most)
Anyway i am not against AMD, in fact the oposite. I am just sick and tired of the issues like noise, heat etc... compared to P4.

shudder, K6

AMD's Performance Ratings are on the mark. use them to compare P4 and Athlon. At most add 100 to the Performance Rating, but a general rule is 66MHz of Athlon = 100MHz of P4.

if you overclock the FSB of the Athlon, it would be closer to the P4 though. of course that is more work.

my AMD system did run really quiet, but you know what? I've not been using a good enough power supply from the beginning. If I'd had a decent one, I know it'd be fine.
Now it's noisy.
I can't blame AMD for that.
My case is ****e too.
Next system I build will be AMD...and less shoddy built in that direction :P

U were really lucky to have a quiet AMD system. Were u using water cooling or something better(extremely sarcastic).
NO seriously on average AMD systems are noisier. The cpu fans run at a far higher rpm as wel all know. Simple as that. U can argue all u want. I have many friends with AMD and i have had many AMD systems.

Red face

Man... I can't believe some of the bickering. "Intel is an evil money grabbing Corp" or "AMD is the little child". Please people, realize that with both companies around, the winner is us, the consumer. Grant it, I'm pissed that most of the OEM's out there offer only Intel machines; but most of us here build our own systems, so we can chose whichever chip we want.

As for you overclockers... I'll never understand you guys. Maybe 5 or 6 years ago, but today... please, I prefer a quiet computer. I don't want to here a scream fan over my vacuum. I guess this is my choice, some of you chose to OC and thats okay.

Oh, BTW... I pick AMD all the way. I don't care if Intel has the raw CPU speed lead.

hey, with video cards getting CPU limited at higher and higher resolutions, it makes more sense to overclock. jus 2 years ago 640X480 was the only CPU limited res(for engines that aren't wholly CPU limited like UT). now it's easily 1024. and with R9700, perhaps even higher
