Question NVIDIA and x86_64 (AMD Opteron)

I'm running gentoo with kernel 2.4.22. I have a GeForce4 Ti 4600. I downloaded the latest drivers and both the GLX and the NVIDIA source compiled and installed just fine. An lsmod command would list the nvidia kernel module. I also made sure to update my XF86Config-4 file.

However, whenever I start the X server my whole computer locks up and I have to reboot. No time for error messages or anything...

Any thoughts? I really don't know where to start with this one. The "nv" driver does work but is, as always, slow.

Thanks!
