Default 9700 blows...AWAY EVERYTHING

Out of all the cards that ATi has made, this is the crappiest card ever because of the following reasons:

a) what the hell is up with the power sharing to the hard drive..
b) the drivers is the most fu**ed POS sh|t ever, that never worked so I had to go to Catalyst 2.1,2.2,2.3, yet it still doesn't work
c) their driver team sucks ****

*EDIT* Why I don't like ATi...
a) why do I have to do all of this trouble when I didn't have any with the GeForce 4 Ti 4600
b) why did ATi have to copy the unified driver management from nVidia

rev 1.3 ROCKS! rev 1.1 SOCKS!

Woah, easy there man. Before you start claiming the card is crap, think of the hardware problems you may be having instead of just blaming it on a card that works fine for hundreds of people.

And I truly wonder if you even own it...

"e) why did ATi have to copy the unified driver management from nVidia"

"a) what the hell is up with the power sharing to the hard drive.."

What does it matter? How does that make the card any worse? If you really have it, and aren't just bashing ati for the sake of bashing, try underclocking your CPU or use the uninstall drivers instruction from rage3d.com/board. Also try a BIOS update; you own an early 8X AGP motherboard.

i have tried everything from buying a new power supply, to reformatting my hard drive, underclocking, and even moving the sound cards around so it can free up some IRQs for it....

however, i found this site (www.driverheaven.net) and i'm willing to give it one more try...if it doesn't work, i'm returning it even though there's 15% restocking fee

for some reason, my ATi Radeon 9700 didn't work until I plugged it directly to the power supply with an extra plug I had...if I use the plug I had that came with the box, it doesn't work...

another thing, even if I set the settings to AGP 4X, it'll boot what remain black right after the windows XP load screen (the one with the green meter for home | blue meter for professional), everything is underclocked, and I'm gonna install the drivers as soon as I reformat...

Yeah, I can imagine them giving you plenty of help if your attitude was the same there. I hope they told you to stick it up your ass, connect the extra power connector to a wall socket, and enjoy the blazing fast graphics.

Rage3d will help you. You simply need to be calm and cool and specific as possible about your troubles. They really have a great bunch of people over there, but if all you do is say "this thing sucks" than nobody is gonna give you any sympathy. Make another post, don't curse, and don't say the 9700 flat out sucks, and see what happens.

As for you're problems, although I no longer bother buying ATI cards for gaming myself, it isn't really fair to judge a card that has been on the market for so short a period of time. I'll gladly say R8500 sucks because it was out for over a year when I bought it and I still had problems, so I switched to GF4 instead. But to say a card sucks right after it's release...

Is that SiS board of yours AGP 8x? If it is I hear you need to look for a bios update. My 9700 works perfectly with the cat 2.3 drivers and d3d patch. So far every game runs flawlessly so I'm willing to bet your mobo is the culprit.

Yeah this card sucks so much It's only 2-3X as fast as a Ti4600 and it works perfectly in over 20 games for me. Don't jump to conclusions because a few people are having problems....

Yep just like I thought, it's his board. Notice the Sis 648 chip? You should go look for an updated bios as well.

Copy and pasted from the rage 3d front page:

ABit Sr7-8x SiS648 Beta Bios - 7:40 pm EST - MrB
Saw a user post this on the forum and now he is a Radeon 9700 happy camper. ABIT has released a beta bios that was just released on the 18th. It fixes the following:

Beta BIOS release SR7_BQ.R02 for SR7-8X

1. Support Intel Celeron 2.0G CPU.
2. For ATI R300 (RADEON 9700) Hangs up during 3D benchmarking or gaming issue, provide two settings to workaround. "POST Write Combine: Enabled" and "No Mask of SBA FE: Enabled" If the 3D benchmarking still failed, try the alternative-"POST Write Combine: Disabled" and "No Mask of SBA FE: Enabled"
3. BIOS compile date: 9/18/2002.

You can download it here. Remember to be careful when flashing and that this is a beta bios! Thanks goes to RiVoLT for joining our forums and informing everyone!
