Question X-server and SUSE8.2

I know I might sound like a newbee, but how to exit the x-server so I can install the nVidia drivers in SuSE 8.2? I'm used to exit using "ctrl-alt-bksp", but it returns into window mode. Anybody that kan give me a "how to" on this subject?
